Fear's mother - Mamma della paura -

Sphinx, Lausanne, Switzerland - Images by Sunil Deepak

Lausanne, Switzerland: Outside the central library there are two sphinxes. Their faces and chests are like a woman, eagle's wings and body of a lion. The Sphinx used to ask riddles to the persons and those who could not answer, she used to eat. I feel that the legend of Sphinx is similar to the story of Sursa in Ramayan who meets Hanuman when he is going to Lanka. Though she has the face of a woman, in Arabic language, the Sphinx is called Abu-Al-Haul, or the father of fear.

Kohima, Nagaland, India: In the "Two & a half statues" monument of the second world war there are two refugees, a woman and a child, coming from Burma, and a soldier of the Assam Rifles. I hardly know this part of India's history and it raises many questions in my mind.

Brussels, Belgium: Till the last world war, animals like horses, elephants and dogs played important roles in the wars. If there will be memorials for today's wars, which animals will be shown in them? Probably those memorials will have drones and robots in the place of animals. Today's images have a second world war memorial which has dogs and horses in it.

Columns with stories, Millennium monument, Jorhat, Assam, India - Images by Sunil Deepak
Columns with stories, Hadrian's column, Rome, Italy - Images by Sunil Deepak

Today's images present stories depicted on pillars from 3 countries. The first image is of Vienna (Austria) cathedral built in 1726 that shows the life of St Karl and other Christian saints. The second image is from Jorhat (Assam, India) with a column built in 2000 that depicts local life and the freedom fighters. The third image is from Rome (Italy) with the two thousand years old pillar made for emperor Trajan showing his victory in a war.

Congo pioneers colonial monument, Brussels, Belgium - Images by Sunil Deepak, 2013

Brussels, Belgium: This monument related to the Belgium's empire in Congo remembers the success in bringing "civilization" to that African country. In recent decades, Europeans understand that the foundations of that "civilization" were based on human exploitation and thus there are campaigns to remove some of these monuments. Most such monuments show kings and military generals, while the monument shown in the images today is different - it has an African woman. I could not find out the context of this monument. Author Mathew G. Sanders has written about such colonial monuments in his book "Selling the Congo".

Brussels, Belgium: I found the first world war monument very interesting. It has the Roman goddess of victory. Her right hand is raised up to greet people while the left hand is on a bundle of sticks, that was the symbol of Roman empire (and was later used by Mussolini for his fascist party).

Lucknow, India: I had heard a lot about the "You first, you first" polite culture of Lucknow, however I saw little evidence of it on the city roads. Today's images have the drammatic colours of evening at Bada Imambara palace.

Singing rooster - Cantagallo -

War memorial, Divonne les Bains, France - images by Sunil Deepak, 2014
War memorial, Divonne les Bains, France - images by Sunil Deepak, 2014

Divonne les Bains, France: In the 18th century during the French revolution, singing rooster was considered as the national symbol. Old name of France was Gallus, the land of Gauls, but Gallus also means rooster. As the rooster crows early in the morning, it is considered as the symbol of light after darkness. For all these reasons, many war memorials in France have a singing rooster. Today's images show such a war memorial where the rooster is standing on the dying German eagle.

Brussels, Belgium: The two lovers at the lake are actually the characters of a book, Thyl and Nele. This is a monument to Charles De Coster, considered the father of Belgian writing. The monument is the opera of sculptor Charles Samuel, a fan of De Coster. The monument has different characters from De Coster's book - a cat, a cooking pot, a spinning rod. Ignored during his life time, De Coster often sat near this lake.

Geneva, Switzerland: The Brunswick monument is near the lake with the brave prince sitting on a horse on one side and on the other, there is his tomb, surrounded with statues. This is the monument of Karl II, from the kingdom of Brunsick in Germany, who was forced out by a public revolution because they considered him corrupt, and who had found refuge in Geneva. Corrupt or not, if you have money, someone will be happy to build a monument to remember your name!

Ayutthaya, Thailand: So many old Buddha temples seem to be standing precariously, you never know when they might fall down. Many decapitated Buddhas sit there, their broken fragments in their laps. I thought that if Buddha himself could have seen them he would have smiled and said, "The world is an illusion, the only eternal truth is suffering!"
