Today air travel has become common. Often people have to spend hours in the airports. If airports are beautiful places, they are not just a way to reach the destination, but become part of the journey's enjoyment. Today's images have art exhibitions from three Asian airports - from Bangkok, Delhi and Beijing.

Milan, Italy: At the world expo 2015, many countries along with their advanced technology, also present their traditional arts. Today's images have the traditional dance Phi Ta Khon from Thailand, that is also known as ghost dance. This dance is a tradition in the Loei province in the north-east of Thailand. One of the stories behind this dance is about Buddha who was walking near a forest and the forest ghosts became his followers and started walking behind him.

Falling asleep - Addormentarsi -

Falling asleep sitting, Assam, India - Images by Sunil Deepak
Falling asleep sitting, Bangkok, Thailand - Images by Sunil Deepak
Falling asleep sitting, Cape Town, South Africa - Images by Sunil Deepak

Sleep can be so unpredictable. Sometimes we keep on turning sides in the bed while there are times, try as much you can, but it is impossible to keep your eyes open. Today's images have some moments of falling asleep while sitting from - Guwahati (India), Bangkok (Thailand) and Cape Town (South Africa).

Bangkok, Thailand: When I had seen the statues of gods with moustaches for the first time, it felt a little strange. For example, in India, I had never seen Vishnu statues with moustache. I had thought that this must be only in Thailand. However, after coming to Assam (India), I have seen that even here, the statues of god Vishwakarma have moustaches.

Ayutthaya, Thailand: Hinduism and Buddhism had spread from India to the countries of far east. In Thailand, the king is known as "Rama" and his old capital is called Ayutthaya (derived from Ayodhaya). There I saw these lion statues among the ruins of the old Wat Thammakarat temple. This is supposed to be the oldest temple in Ayutthaya. Archeologists say that in this place, before the Thai temple, there was an old Khmer Hindu temple that had statues of lions and snakes.

Broken Buddha - Buddha frammentato -

Buddha statues, Wat Maha That, Ayutthaya, Thailand - images by Sunil Deepak, 2009

Ayutthaya, Thailand: So many old Buddha temples seem to be standing precariously, you never know when they might fall down. Many decapitated Buddhas sit there, their broken fragments in their laps. I thought that if Buddha himself could have seen them he would have smiled and said, "The world is an illusion, the only eternal truth is suffering!"

Chinese Buddhist deities, Bangkok, Thailand - images by Sunil Deepak, 2009
Chinese Buddhist deities, Bangkok, Thailand - images by Sunil Deepak, 2009
Chinese Buddhist deities, Bangkok, Thailand - images by Sunil Deepak, 2009

Bangkok, Thailand: When I saw these statues in a Buddhist temple, I thought about the journeys of cultures accross countries and the way they change. First Buddhism must have spread from north India and Nepal towards Thailand, China and countries of East Asia. Then with time, the Chinese Buddhist traditions influenced the countries of East Asia. Thus, Buddhism in each Asian country shows Indian, Chinese and local influences. Now in India, often you can buy Hindu deities made in China - perhaps with time, India's Hinduism will have Chinese influence?

Strange shrine - Strano santuario -

Strange spirit house shrine Bangkok, Thailand - images by Sunil Deepak, 2013
Strange spirit house shrine Bangkok, Thailand - images by Sunil Deepak, 2013
Strange spirit house shrine Bangkok, Thailand - images by Sunil Deepak, 2013

Bangkok, Thailand: I had lost my way and reached there by chance - a temple shaped like a small hill, with tiny stairs on the two sides, with numerous tiny temples with pictures of dead persons all around the hill. I had heard of "spirit houses" where Thai persons keep the ashes of the dead family members, but this place seemed different. I felt that this shrine had some special significance. I asked the persons around but did not find anyone who spoke English. Perhaps someone who has more knowledge about Thailand can tell the role of this shrine?

Bangkok snooker -

Snooker bar, Bangkok,Thailand - images by Sunil Deepak, 2010

Bangkok, Thailand: In many countries I have seen young guys from ordinary or lower classes (in economic terms) playing snooker. They have their snooker bars, where you rarely see girls, but it does not happen in India. I think that snooker became popular around the world from American western films, but not in India because in India, only recently they have started dubbing American films in Indian languages. Also, in India, playing carom-board is very popular, which seems like a smaller version of snooker to me. What do you think? Today's images have a snooker bar from Bo-Bae market in Bangkok.

Ayutthya, Thailand: Like in India, there is an Ayodhya in Thailand also, Thai people call it Ayutthya. Today's images have ruins of Buddha temple from Ayutthya.

Shrine - Santuario -

A shrine, Bangkok, Thailand - S. Deepak, 2009
A shrine, Bangkok, Thailand - S. Deepak, 2009
A shrine, Bangkok, Thailand - S. Deepak, 2009

Bangkok, Thailand: This small temple was not marked on the tourist map and everything there was written in Thai. I felt that it was not an ordinary temple but a shrine to someone, but what was it only someone who knows Thai language can tell.
