South Tyrol, Italy: Surrounded by the mountains, this thirteenth century castle was called Belforte or the beautiful castle. Today only its ruins remain.

Naga ship - Nave Naga -

Cathedral, Kohima, Nagaland, India - Images by Sunil Deepak

Kohima, Nagaland, India: The architecture of the Kohima cathedral is a little different. Its roofs are shaped like the traditional Naga houses, like the bow of a ship. Its bell tower seems inspired from the tower of a submarine. The tower is linked to different corners of the roofs as if they are veils of a boat. That is why I am calling it a "Naga ship". Majority of the christians in Nagaland are Baptist protestants but catholics are also significant and this is their cathedral. Built at a corner of the New Ministers' Hill, it is visible from far away.

Milan, Italy: At the World Expo 2015, there are many examples of architectural experiments, such as the changing ways in which walls can be perceived. Poster on the walls or video-walls are now common. The walls of Uruguay pavilion that had more windows and less walls was perhaps inspired from the Hawa Mahal in Jaipur. On the other hand Israel pavilion with crops growing on its walls was certainly innovative.

Milan, Italy:In the World Expo 2015, many countries have used mirrors in their pavilions. I especially loved the Russian pavilion, where the whole roof is a giant mirror in which the world below is turned upside down. Today's images have some mirrors from the Expo.

Dinosaur egg - Uova di dinosauro -

Malaysia pavilion, Expo 2015, Milan, Italy - Images by Sunil Deepak

Milan, Italy: At the World Expo 2015, architects have tried to come with innovative designs so that their pavilions may look different from those of other countries. Like the Malaysia pavilion. When I saw it, I asked myself, what did it represent? My first thought was that perhaps the architect had seen "Jurassic Park" and was inspired by the dinosaur eggs? I also thought of Gulliver's travels where he finds himself in the land of the giants, perhaps the hens of that giant-land laid big eggs like this? Actually they have explained that its inspiration comes from seeds, that the natural forces spread from one place to another in the forests.

Korea pavilion, Expo 2015, Milan, Italy - Images by Sunil Deepak

Milan, Italy: At the World Expo 2015, the architecture of the Korean pavilion is inspired by the moon and the traditional Korean moon shaped jars used for keeping food. There is a round stone moon outside the pavilion, that needs to be looked at closely. It shows the 7000 years old prehistoric rock-art from Bangudae in Korea. Among the figures of this rock-art there is a group of whales that seem to be following 3 tortoises (in the first image), which is unique and has made these petroglyphs famous. It seems as if the artist had flown up in the sky to take a picture of these magnificent animals.

Hanging gardners - Giardinieri pensili -

Milan, Italy: I loved the Brazilian pavilion at the World Expo 2015. It made me think of the opposite concept of "Hanging gardens" by making people hang on a rope-net over a tropical garden. See-through walls, pieces of open sky above you, a Brazilian forest below, the sounds of tropical birds chirping all around you, while you try to maintain your balance on that rope-net! If you were feeling sleepy, it wakes you up. Through this pavilion, on one hand Brazil reminds you about its rich nature, on the other hand, it shows-off their modern designs and advanced technology.

Milano, Italia: Mi è piaciuto molto il padiglione brasiliano all'Expo 2015.

I love Turkish blue colour, and whenever I see it I want to click its picture. It is the colour of Turquoise stone that used to be imported from Turkey. Today's images have buildings with a touch of Turkish blue from New York/USA, Bologna/Italy and Prague/Czech Republic.

Brussels, Belgium: The imposing Town Hall building is in the main city square called Grand Place. Built originally in the fifteenth century, it was destroyed in a war and was repaired around 1840. On its outer walls, 300 statues of important persons of Brussels were placed including nobles, magistrates, philosophers and artists. When the names of the persons whose statues were to be placed there were decided, there must have been a lot of discussions - those whose statues were put there must have been very proud, while those who were excluded must have been sad. Today no one remembers anything about most of the statues.

Brazilia, Brazil: I love the architecture of this city. Full of swaggering self-confidence, it seems to say, "I don't care about your criteria of beauty, I will make my own criteria." Gulliver's travel include a journey to the land of giants, this architecture seems to be made for that land. Today's images have the national parliament building from Brazilia, designed by architect Oscar Niemeyer.
