Living history - Storia vivente - जीवित इतिहास

Brussels, Belgium: This monument related to the Belgium's empire in Congo remembers the success in bringing "civilization" to that African country. In recent decades, Europeans understand that the foundations of that "civilization" were based on human exploitation and thus there are campaigns to remove some of these monuments. Most such monuments show kings and military generals, while the monument shown in the images today is different - it has an African woman. I could not find out the context of this monument. Author Mathew G. Sanders has written about such colonial monuments in his book "Selling the Congo".

ब्रस्लस्ज़, बेलजियमः बेलजियम के कोँगो साम्राज्य से जुड़ा यह स्मारक उस अफ्रीकी देश में "सभ्यता" लाने की यूरोपीय सफलता का गर्व व्यक्त करता था. उस "सभ्यता" की नींव मानव शोषण पर टिकी थी, इस बात को आधुनिक यूरोपीय जनता समझती है और कई बार इन स्मारकों को हटाने के लिए लोग प्रयत्न करते हैं. इस तरह के अधिकतर स्मारकों में यूरोपीय शासकों तथा मिलेटरी जनरलों को दिखाया जाता है, जबकि आज की तस्वीरों वाला स्मारक उनसे भिन्न है - इसमें मूर्ति अफ्रीकी युवती की है. इस स्मारक को किस संदर्भ में बनाया गया यह नहीं जान पाया. लेखक मेथ्थयू जी सैन्डरस ने अपनी पुस्तक "सैलिंग द कोंगो" इस तरह के स्मारकों के बारे में लिखा है.

Gli europei moderni capiscono che le fondamenta di quella "civilizzazione" si reggevano sullo sfruttamento umano, per cui spesso vi sono campagne per togliere questi monumenti. Spesso questi monumenti presentano re e generali militari. Il monumento presentato nelle immagini di oggi è diverso perché ha il busto di una donna africana. Non sono riuscito a scoprire il contesto di questo monumento. Autore Mathew G. Sanders nel suo libro "Vendere il Congo" ha scritto di questi monumenti coloniali.

Forgotten names - Nomi dimenticati - भूले बिसरे नाम

Brussels, Belgium: The imposing Town Hall building is in the main city square called Grand Place. Built originally in the fifteenth century, it was destroyed in a war and was repaired around 1840. On its outer walls, 300 statues of important persons of Brussels were placed including nobles, magistrates, philosophers and artists. When the names of the persons whose statues were to be placed there were decided, there must have been a lot of discussions - those whose statues were put there must have been very proud, while those who were excluded must have been sad. Today no one remembers anything about most of the statues.

ब्रस्लज़, बेलजियमः शहर के सबसे महत्वपूर्ण स्कावायर "ग्राड प्लेस" में भव्य नगरपालिका भवन है. पंद्रहवीं शताब्दी का यह भवन युद्ध में नष्ट हो गया था और सन् 1840 के पास इसकी मरम्मत की गयी. बाहर की दीवार पर ब्रस्लज़ के राजघरानों, मजिस्ट्रेट, दर्शनशास्त्री, कलाकार आदि महत्वपूर्ण व्यक्तियों की 300 मूर्तियाँ लगायी गयीं. जब यह निर्णय लिया गया होगा कि किसकी मूर्ति लगायी जाये, तो जाने कितनी बहसें हुई होगीं, कुछ लोग अपनी मूर्ति का सोच कर प्रसन्न हुए होंगे और जिनकी मूर्तियाँ न बनी हों, वह दुखी हुए होंगें. समय ने सबके नाम मिटा दिये, आज अधिकतर मूर्तियों के बारे में किसी को नहीं मालूम कि किसकी मूर्तियाँ थी!

Bruxelles, Belgio: L'imponente edificio del municipio è nella piazza centrale, Gran Palazzo. Costruito originariamente nel quindicesimo secolo, fu distrutto durante una guerra e fu ricostruito intorno al 1840. Sulle sue mura esterne, avevano messo 300 statue dei personaggi importanti di Bruxelles compreso i nobili, i magistrati, i filosofi e gli artisti. Quando avevano deciso quale persone scegliere per le statue, sicuramente avrebbero avuto molte discussioni - quelli che erano stati scelti, magari si sentivano orgogliosi mentre quelli esclusi si sentivano tristi. Oggi quasi nessuno conosce chi erano le persone in quelle statue.

Roman soldier - Soldato romano - रोमन सिपाही

Brussels, Belgium: I found the first world war monument very interesting. It has the Roman goddess of victory. Her right hand is raised up to greet people while the left hand is on a bundle of sticks, that was the symbol of Roman empire (and was later used by Mussolini for his fascist party).

ब्रस्ल्ज़, बैल्जियमः प्रथम विश्व युद्ध का स्मारक मुझे बड़ा दिलचस्प लगा. इसमें रोमन विजय की देवी खड़ी है. उसका दाँया हाथ लोगों के अभिवादन के लिए उठा है, जबकि बाँया हाथ बँधे डँडों की गठरी पर है जो रोम की शक्ति का चिन्ह था (और जिसने बाद में मुसोलीनी की फासिस्ट पार्टी को नाम दिया).

Bruxelles, Belgio: Ho trovato il monumento alla prima guerra mondiale molto interessante. Questo ha la dea romana della vittoria. La sua mano destra è alzata per salutare, mentre la mano sinistra si poggia sul fascio, simbolo dell'impero romano (e poi usato da Mussolini per il suo partito fascista).

Drunken horseman - Cavaliere alticcio - नशीला घुड़सवार

Brussels, Belgium: In Grand Place, the building of the medieval guild of Beer Brewers has a golden horseman on the top. This building now hosts the beer mueusm and one of its room is called the "Fourquet knights room". Fourquet or the mashing rake was a oar like wooden paddle with holes used in making beer, and is a symbol of the beer-makers. However the golden horseman does not carry a fourquet, rather he holds a parchment - perhaps the rules of the guild?

ब्रसल्ज़, बेलजियमः ग्रैंड प्लेस में मध्ययुगीन बियर बनाने वालों की यूनियन के भवन पर एक सुनहरे घुड़सवार की मूर्ति है. इस भवन में अब बियर संग्रहालय है, जिसके एक कक्ष को "फोरक्वे घुड़सवार कक्ष" कहते हैं. "फोरक्वे" यानि लकड़ी का चप्पू जैसा डँडा जिसका प्रयोग बियर बनाने के लिए किया जाता था, को बियर बनाने वालों का चिन्ह माना जाता है. लेकिन सुनहरे घुड़सवार के हाथ में फोरक्वे नहीं दिखाया गया है, बल्कि एक फरमान है - शायद यूनियन के नियमों का फरमान?

Bruxelles, Belgio: In Piazza Grande, c'è la sede della unione dei birrai medievali con un cavaliere dorato in cima. Questo edificio ora ospita il museo della birra e una delle sue sale si chiama "la sala dei cavalieri di fourquet". Fourquet è un lungo mestolo di legno con dei buchi che si usava per produrre birra ed è considerato il simbolo dei birrai. Ma il cavaliere dorato non tiene in mano un fourquet, invece sembra che ha un rotolo - forse erano le regole dell'unione?

Liquid silver - Argento liquido - पिघली चाँदी

Brussels, Belgium: As darkness descends on the lake, for a few moments the water has a metallic glow, turning into liquid silver.

ब्रसल्ज़, बेलजियमः झील पर जब अँधेरा उतरने लगता है तो कुछ पलों के लिए जल में धातू की चमक आ जाती है, पिघली चाँदी सा लगता है.

Bruxelles, Belgio: Quando il buio scende sul lago, per alcuni minuti l'acqua brilla come un metallo, trasformandosi in argento liquido.

Exploring green - Esplorare verde - हरा अन्वेषण

Brussels, Belgium: If you think about green colour, you may imagine the rice fields or mountains covered with pine trees. The theme of today's images is also green, not in nature but in the man-made world. These images are from the Grand Place square of Brussels.

ब्रस्लज़, बेलजियमः हरे रंग की बात हो तो मन में धान के खेत या चीड़ के पेड़ों से ढके पहाड़ों की छवि आती है. आज की तस्वीरों का विषय भी हरा रंग ही है, लेकिन प्रकृति में नहीं बल्कि मानव निर्मित. यह तस्वीरें ब्रस्लज़ शहर के ग्रैंड प्लेस स्कवायर से हैं.

Bruxelles, Belgio: Se pensiamo al verde, immaginiamo le risaie o le montagne coperte di pini. Anche il tema delle immagini di oggi è il verde, non nella natura ma nel mondo creato da uomo. Queste immagini sono dalla piazza Grand Place di Bruxelles.

Grey glass - Vetro grigio - स्लेटी काँच

Brussels, Belgium: The cathedral is in Gothic style with statues and stained glass windows. I was pleasantly struck by the use of grey colour on that stained glass. I think that grey adds seriousness and dignity to those images.

ब्रसल्ज़, बेलजियमः शहर का कैथेड्रल गौथिक शैली का है और भीतर से मूर्तियों तथा रंगीन काँच की खिड़कियों से सजा है. उन खिड़कियों में स्लेटी रंग का इतना प्रयोग देख कर कुछ आश्चर्य हुआ और अच्छा भी लगा. मेरे विचार में स्लेटी रंग से उन चित्रों में गम्भीरता व शालीनता का पुट जुड़ गया है.

Bruxelles, Belgio: La cattedrale è in stile gotico con tante statue, e le finestre hanno i vetri colorati. Mi ha piacevolmente colpito l'uso del colore grigio in quelle finestre. Penso che il grigio aggiunge serietà e dignità alle scene dipinte.

The statue army - Armata delle statue - मूर्तियों की सैना

Brussels, Belgium: Grand Place square in the city centre is famous for its gilded buildings. It includes the municiple building made of gray stone in the Gothic style, adorned with a lot of brass statues.

ब्रसल्ज़, बेलजियमः शहर के मध्य में बना ग्राँड प्लेस सुनहरे रंग से बने चमकते भवनों के लिए विख्यात है. यहीं पर नगरपालिका भवन भी है जो भूरे रंग के पत्थर का गौथिक शैली में बना है और जिस पर ब्रास की बहुत सारी मूर्तियाँ लगी हैं.

Bruxelles, Belgio: La piazza Grand Place nel centro della città è famosa per i suoi edifici dorati. Questi comprendono l'edificio municipale costruito con la pietra grigia e ornato con molte statue di bronzo.

Contradictions - Contradizioni - विरोधाभास

Brussels, Belgium: The cathedral is in the medieval Gothic style while the building next door is in modern style, though it seems to have some inspiration from Gothic. In the middle, there is the statue of cardinal Mercier, a hero for some who see him as the person who resisted German occupation in the first world war, while others look down at him because he thought that the French-speaking people were superior to the Flemish speakers.

ब्रसल्ज़, बेलजियमः कैथेड्रल मध्ययुगीन गोथिक शैली का है और उसके सामने का भवन आधुनिक शैली का, हालाँकि उसमें भी कुछ गौथिक प्रेरणा दिखती है. बीच में लगी है कार्डिनाल मेरसिये की मूर्ति, जिन्हें कुछ लोग हीरो मानते है क्योंकि उन्होंने प्रथम विश्वयुद्ध में जर्मन फौज का कड़ा विरोध किया था, अन्य लोग उन्हें बुरा कहते हैं क्योंकि वह फ्राँससी बोलने वालों को फ्लेमिश बोलने वालों से ऊँचा मानते थे.

Bruxelles, Belgio: La cattedrale è in stile gotico medievale mentre l'edificio accanto è moderno, anche se sembra che ha qualche vaga ispirazione gotica. Tra i due sta la statua del cardinale Mercier, visto come eroe da alcuni per la sua opposizione all'occupazione tedesca durante la prima guerra mondiale mentre altri lo vedono come un reazionario perché pensava che quelli che parlano francese erano superiori a quelli che parlano fiammingo.

Old & new - Vecchio e nuovo - पुराना व नया

Brussels, Belgium: The narrow streets of the old city with solid houses of bricks and mortar, and the wide streets of the new city full of cars and buildings of iron, steel and glass.

ब्रसल्ज़, बेलजियमः पुराने शहर की सँकरी सड़कें, भारी भरकम ईँट पत्थर के भवन और नये शहर की चौड़ी सड़कें, कारों की भीड़ और लोहे, स्टील व शीशे के भवन.

Bruxelles, Belgio: Le strette stradine della vecchia città con le case solide costruite con mattoni e cemento, e le larghe strade piene di macchine della nuova città e gli edifici di ferro, acciaio e vetro.

Mom horse - Mamma cavalla - घोड़ी माँ

Brussels, Belgium: Sometimes, in the middle of a crowd of cars, you can see a mare accompanying her baby horse out on a walk. I could not find out the name of the sculptor but I liked this sculpture of mare with her baby horse.

ब्रसल्ज़, बेलजियमः कारों की भीड़ के बीच में कभी बच्चे को सैर कराते घोड़े भी दिख सकते हैं. इस कलाकृति का शिल्पकार कौन है, यह नहीं पता चला लेकिन घोड़ी माँ के साथ बच्चा मुझे अच्छे लगे.

Bruxelles, Belgio: In mezzo alla folla delle macchine, qualche volta puoi vedere una cavalla con il suo piccolo. Non sono riuscito a scoprire lo scultore di questa scultura, ma mi sono piaciuti la cavalla con il suo piccolo.

Theatre park - Parco del teatro - नाटकघर का बाग

Brussels, Belgium: While going around, I always have this internal tussel between "Hurry up, I still need to see so much" and "Go slowly, enjoy what you see". In the film "Yeh Jawani hai deewani", Deepika says "Something will be left out anyway, let me enjoy this sunset!" Now when I think of that day, I feel that I should have spent more time in this park to observe the sculptures. However on that day I had been too much in a hurry.

ब्रस्ल्ज़, बेलजियमः घूमते समय हमेशा मन में खींचा तानी सी चलती है कि "जल्दी करो, अभी तो अन्य बहुत कुछ देखना है" या "आराम से देखो, भागने में आनन्द नहीं". फ़िल्म "यह जवानी है दीवानी" में दीपिका कहती है, "कुछ न कुछ तो छूटेगा ही, मुझे इस सूर्यास्त को देखने दो!" अब सोचूँ तो लगता है कि मुझे रुक कर आराम से इस बाग की मूर्तियों के शिल्प को देखना समझना चहिये था, पर उस दिन मन में भागम भाग थी, कुछ भी ठीक से नहीं देखा.

Bruxelles, Belgio: Quando vado in giro, ho sempre questa lotta interna tra "Fai presto, devi ancora vedere tante cose" e "Fai con calma e godi quello che fai". Nel film "Yeh jawaani hai deewani", Deepika dice, "Alla fine, ci sarà sempre qualcosa che non hai fatto. Lasciami godere questo tramonto!" Ora quando ripenso a quel giorno, penso che dovevo fermarmi in questo parco per osservare meglio le sculture. Invece quel giorno avevo fatto tutto di corsa.

Brussels, Belgium: When I saw the wood-fort and the underneath tunnels in the children's park, I remembered the caves in Delhi's Birla Mandir where as children we used to play hide and seek.

Bruxelles, Belgio: Quando ho visto il forte di legno e i tunnel nel parco giochi per i bambini, ho pensato alle grotte nel tempio di Birla a Delhi, dove quando ero bambino, giocavamo al nascondino.

Brussels, Belgium: The king's statue in front of the cathedral looks as if Rintintin, hero of Belgian comics, has grown up.
