Munich, Germany: The fish fountain (Fischbrunnen) has 3 statues of adolescent boys, among whom one holds a fish in his hand. If you look carefully you will see that the statues are like a mini-film of a boy, showing 3 moments of his catching fish and throwing the water. It was made by sculptor Konrad Knoll in 1864, destroyed during second world war and then rebuilt in 1954.

Vienna, Austria: The myths of water horses were common in Scotland where the monster of Lochness lake was described as a horse with webbed hoofs and a fish like tail. The fountain of the sea god Neptune built in Schonbrunn, the royal palace of Vienna, in 1780, has on the top Neptune with the sea goddess Thetis, while at lower level there are Neptune's soldiers Tritons, half men and half fishes. They are accompnaied by water horses who are supposed to pull the chariot of Neptune.

Schio, Italy: Sparrows are frolicking in the fountain pond and children are watching them spell-bound, a baby girl has a book open in her lap and her eyes are lost in her own world. I love this sculpture by the Italian artist Alfonso Fortuna.

Lisbon, Portugal: Photography means trying to capture the temporariness of life in the camera. Can you really ever capture the falling water drops?

Brussels, Belgium: I loved this statue of the man with the big moustache sitting on the side of a fountain in the city centre, holding a book in his hand. Does anyone know whose statue is this?

Bangalore, India: Lal Bagh botanical gardens have a beautiful glass house, but it did not have any special flowers or plants. Perhaps it was being used for some meeting or was being repaired.

Sea god - Dio del mare -

Neptune fountain, Trento, Italy - images by Sunil Deepak, 2011
Neptune fountain, Trento, Italy - images by Sunil Deepak, 2011
Neptune fountain, Trento, Italy - images by Sunil Deepak, 2011

Trento, Italy: Neptune of the Greeks and Varun in India, both were sea gods. In Rigveda, Varun's name is mentioned always together with Mitr, but in India, I have never heard of a god called Mitr. However, ancient Rome had temples of Mitra, who was god of the warriors and bulls were sacrificed to him. Maybe some scholar can tell if the Persian sacred books Ahura-Avesta say anything about Varun and Mitr? Today's images have a fountain of Neptune, the sea god.

London, UK: Hyde park is huge and it has many fountains and monuments. Today's images have the "Joy of life" fountain from the north-eastern corner of Hyde park, built by sculptor Thomas B. Huxley-Jones. It has a couple dancing in the centre and four children floating in four corners. It is also known as "four winds".
