A dancer from the Siddhi Dhamal dance group from Gujarat. The forefathers of Siddhi community had come to India from the eastern coast of Africa. Their dance has a mixture of their Indian and African heritages.

एक लोक नृत्य कार्यक्रम में गुजरात के सिद्धी धमाल का नर्तक. सिद्धी समुदाय के पूर्वज पूर्वी अफ्रीका से भारत आये थे. उनके नृत्य में भारतीय तथा अफ्रीकी संस्कृति का विमिश्रण हैं.

Street theatre - Teatro di strada - सड़क का नाटक

Nampula, Mozambique: Governmental and non-governmental organisations often use street theatre for creating public awareness. It was the rehearsal for a street theatre. Its objective was to provide information about a health programme. However I felt that their message about women's rights was not appropriate. The play showed that because the wife did not take proper care of her husband when he was sick, when he was cured he had the right to get married to another woman. When I saw these old pictures, I remembered my discussions with the writer and actors of this group.

नमपूला, मोज़ाम्बीकः जनचेतना के लिए विभिन्न सरकारी व गैरसरकारी संस्थाएँ सड़क के नाटकों का आयोजन करती हैं. वैसे ही एक सड़क के नाटक की रिहर्सल हो रही थी जिसका उद्देश्य था स्वास्थ्य सम्बन्धी जानकारी देना. लेकिन मेरे विचार में उनकी कहानी में नारी अधिकारों के बारे में जो संदेश दिया गया, वह कुछ अटपटा सा था. नाटक का कहना था कि चूँकि पत्नी ने अपने बीमार पति की ठीक से देखभाल नहीं की, जब पति ठीक हो गया तो उसका पहली पत्नी को छोड़ कर दूसरा विवाह करना ठीक था. पुरानी तस्वीरों को देखा तो इस नाटक के लेखक और अभिनेताओं से हुई बहस याद आ गयी!

Nampula, Mozambico: Le organizzazioni governative e non, spesso organizzano teatro di strada per informare il pubblico. Ero alle prove di uno di questi teatri. Il suo obbiettivo era quello di dare informazioni su un programma sanitario. Ma pensavo che il suo messaggio riguardo i diritti delle donne non era appropriato. Dicevano che se la moglie non ha preso buona cura del suo marito quando lui era ammalato, quando lui guarisce è giusto che prende la seconda moglie. Mentre guardavo le vecchie foto, mi sono ricordato delle discussioni avute con lo scrittore e gli attori di questo gruppo.

African Kori - Kori africano - अफ्रीकी कोरी

Washington D.C., USA: Some nature lovers wish that all zoos should be closed because they feel that keeping birds and animals in cages is cruelty. I feel that there can be nothing better than a zoo to teach children about the diversity, beauty and importance of nature. Today's images have African Kori bustard from the zoo in Washington DC. It is also known as "gum eater bird" as it eats the gummy raisin from the stems of Acacia trees.

वाशिन्गटन डी.सी., अमरीकाः कुछ प्रकृति प्रेमी चाहते हैं कि सभी चिड़ियाघर बन्द कर दिये जाये क्योंकि उनके विचार में पशु पक्षियों को पिँजरों में बन्द करना क्रूरता है. मेरे विचार में बच्चों को प्रकृति की विविधता, सुन्दरता व महत्व समझाने के लिए चिड़ियाघरों से बढ़ कर कोई अन्य जगह नहीं. आज की तस्वीरों में अफ्रीकी कोरी पक्षी वाशिन्गटन के चिड़ियाघर से. इसे "गोँद खाने वाला पक्षी" भी कहते हैं क्योंकि यह अफ्रीकी बबूल वृक्ष से निकलने वाली गोँद को खाता है.

Washington D.C., Stati Uniti: Alcuni amanti della natura vorrebbero chiudere tutti gli zoo perché credono che tenere animali e uccelli nelle gabbie è crudele. Penso che gli zoo possono essere i luoghi migliori per fare capire ai bambini la diversità, la bellezza e l'importanza della natura. Le foto di oggi hanno gli uccelli africani Koro Bustard dallo zoo di Washington. Lo chiamano anche "Uccello che mangia la colla" perché questi mangiano la resina che esce dai tronchi degli alberi di Acacia.

Ilha, Mozambique: To wash cloths early in the morning, before the sun rises and before it gets hot, is fine. But do you really wash things with sea water? May be to reduce your consumption of water, you first wash things in sea water and then rinse them in normal water?

इल्या, मोज़ाम्बीकः सुबह सुबह, धूप निकलने से पहले, कपड़े धोना तो ठीक है क्योंकि गर्मी कम होगी. लेकिन सागर के पानी से भी क्या कपड़े धोते हैं? या शायद मीठा पानी कम लगे इसलिए पहले सागर के पानी में धो कर, बाद में उन्हें मीठे पानी में एक बार निचोड़ देते हैं?

Ilha, Mozambico: Lavare i vestiti presto alla mattina, prima che si alzi il sole e diventi caldo, va bene. Ma lavare con l'aqua del mare? Forse per ridurre il consumo dell'acqua prima si lava nell'acqua del mare e dopo li si sciacqua nell'acqua normale?

Gorongosa's antelopes - Antilopi di Gorongosa - गोरन्गोज़ा के हिरण

Manica, Mozambique: Gorongosa natural reserve has many varieties of antelopes. Three of them are presented today - waterbucks, reedbuck and oribi.

Red man - Uomo rosso - लाल पुरुष

Cape Town, South Africa: A red man made out of empty crates of Coca Cola. Red colour has been associated with communism and sometimes the words "red man" are used for a communist person, while on the other hand, Coca Cola is considered as a symbol of capitalism. To make their message stronger, often publicists turn upside down the symbols.

केपटाउन, दक्षिण अफ्रीकाः कोका कोला के खाली क्रेटों से बना एक लाल पुरुष. वैसे तो लाल रंग कम्यूनिस्म से जुड़ा है, और कई बार "लाल पुरुष" शब्द को कम्यूनिस्ट व्यक्ति के प्रयोग किया जाता है, दूसरी ओर कोका कोला को केपिटलिस्म यानी पूँजीवाद का प्रतीक माना जाता है. अपने संदेश का असर बढ़ाने के लिए, विज्ञापन करने वाले अक्सर प्रतीकों को उलट देते हैं.

Città del capo, Sud Africa: Un uomo rosso costruito con le scatole vuote di Coca Cola. Il colore rosso è spesso associato al comunismo e qualche volta le parole "uomo rosso" sono usate per parlare di comunisti. Dall'altra parte, Coca Cola è uno degli simboli del capitalismo. Per rendere il loro messaggio più forte, i pubblicisti spesso capovolgono i simboli.

Thirsty warthog - Facocero assettato - प्यासी सूअर

Gorongosa, Mozambqiue: Probably she was pregnant and lived some where close to the entrance of the national park. She never looked at us, walking slowly she went to the small fountain surrounded by stones. When she found that the fountain was dry, still walking slowly, she disappeared in the middle of the trees.

गोरन्गोज़ा, मोजाम्बीकः शायद वह गर्भवति थी और नेशनल पार्क प्रवेश द्वार के करीब ही कहीं रहती थी. उसने हमारी ओर रुक कर नहीं देखा, मँथर गति से चलती सीधा पत्थरों के बीच बने फुव्वारे की ओर गयी. फ़िर जब देखा कि फुव्वारा सूखा था तो वैसे ही धीरे धीरे चल कर पेड़ों के बीच में चली गयी.

Gorongosa, Mozambico: Probabilmente era in cinta e abitava nei dintorni dell'entrata del parco nazionale. Senza guardarci era andata lentamente verso la piccola fontana circondata dalle pietre. Quando aveva trovato la fontana asciutta, sempre con il passo lento, era scomparsa in mezzo agli alberi.

Rock colours - Colori delle rocce - चट्टानों के रंग

Naivasha, Kenya: Many thousand kilometers long Rift valley crosses over the heart of Africa. Looking at the rocks, I was wondering about their different colours. I think that the white colour in the third image is caused by pigeon or bird shit. Today's images have the different colours of the rocks in the valley.

नईवाशा, कीनियाः कई हज़ार किलोमीटर लम्बी रिफ्ट घाटी अफ्रीका के हृदय के बीच से गुजरती है.  वहाँ की चट्टानों को देखते हुए उनके भिन्न रंगों के बारे में सोच रहा था. मेरे विचार में तीसरी तस्वीर का सफेद रंग कबूतरों या अन्य पक्षियों की बीट की वजह से हैं. आज की तस्वीरों में घाटी की चट्टानों के रंग.

Naivasha, Kenya: La grande fossa tettonica (Rift valley), lunga qualche migliaia di chilometri, passa attraverso il cuore dell'Africa. Mentre guardavo le rocce, mi chiedevo dei loro diversi colori. Penso che il bianco della terza immagine è dovuto alla cacca dei piccioni o di altri uccelli. Le immagini di oggi hanno i diversi colori delle rocce della valle.

Living history - Storia vivente - जीवित इतिहास

Brussels, Belgium: This monument related to the Belgium's empire in Congo remembers the success in bringing "civilization" to that African country. In recent decades, Europeans understand that the foundations of that "civilization" were based on human exploitation and thus there are campaigns to remove some of these monuments. Most such monuments show kings and military generals, while the monument shown in the images today is different - it has an African woman. I could not find out the context of this monument. Author Mathew G. Sanders has written about such colonial monuments in his book "Selling the Congo".

ब्रस्लस्ज़, बेलजियमः बेलजियम के कोँगो साम्राज्य से जुड़ा यह स्मारक उस अफ्रीकी देश में "सभ्यता" लाने की यूरोपीय सफलता का गर्व व्यक्त करता था. उस "सभ्यता" की नींव मानव शोषण पर टिकी थी, इस बात को आधुनिक यूरोपीय जनता समझती है और कई बार इन स्मारकों को हटाने के लिए लोग प्रयत्न करते हैं. इस तरह के अधिकतर स्मारकों में यूरोपीय शासकों तथा मिलेटरी जनरलों को दिखाया जाता है, जबकि आज की तस्वीरों वाला स्मारक उनसे भिन्न है - इसमें मूर्ति अफ्रीकी युवती की है. इस स्मारक को किस संदर्भ में बनाया गया यह नहीं जान पाया. लेखक मेथ्थयू जी सैन्डरस ने अपनी पुस्तक "सैलिंग द कोंगो" इस तरह के स्मारकों के बारे में लिखा है.

Bruxelles, Belgio: Questo monumento legato all'impero congolese di Belgio, ricordava il successo della missione "civilizzatrice" in quel paese africano. Gli europei moderni capiscono che le fondamenta di quella "civilizzazione" si reggevano sullo sfruttamento umano, per cui spesso vi sono campagne per togliere questi monumenti. Spesso questi monumenti presentano re e generali militari. Il monumento presentato nelle immagini di oggi è diverso perché ha il busto di una donna africana. Non sono riuscito a scoprire il contesto di questo monumento. Autore Mathew G. Sanders nel suo libro "Vendere il Congo" ha scritto di questi monumenti coloniali.

Naivasha, Kenya: There are so many wild animals here that you can often see them crossing the road or on the roadside. Today's images have giraffe, deer and zebra from the road going to Oloiden lake.
