I had seen the dance performance of Maya Dance Theatre from Singapore in Delhi. Their dance had a nice fusion of contemporary dance and classical Bharatnatyam.

Street theatre - Teatro di strada -

Nampula, Mozambique: Governmental and non-governmental organisations often use street theatre for creating public awareness. It was the rehearsal for a street theatre. Its objective was to provide information about a health programme. However I felt that their message about women's rights was not appropriate. The play showed that because the wife did not take proper care of her husband when he was sick, when he was cured he had the right to get married to another woman. When I saw these old pictures, I remembered my discussions with the writer and actors of this group.

Bologna, Italy: The white paint on her face made her seem like a Japanese geisha. She was painting red flowers on her body and somehow that reminded me of the woman in Klimt's painting "The Kiss".

Another I - Un altro io -

Bhaona actors prepare, Majuli, Assam, India - Images by Sunil Deepak
Stilt dancers prepare, Bologna, Italy - Images by Sunil Deepak
Play actors prepare, Washington DC, USA - Images by Sunil Deepak

If we think of our lives, there must be many moments when our small or big decisions had given a certain direction to our lives. It is natural sometimes to wonder if we had not done this and done that, who would have been we today? Actors get opportunities to become "someone else". Today's images have those moments of becoming someone else. First image has Rama from the dance-play Bhaona of Majuli (Assam, India) helping to tie the crown on Lakshman. Second image has stilt dancers of Bologna (Italy) getting ready for the parade on sexual rights. And, the third image is from Washington DC (USA), where an Indian actor gets ready to play Pakistan's founder Muhammed Ali Jinnah.

Washington, USA: Lansburgh theater is considered as one of the older and prestigious art places in the city, managed by Shakespeare Theater Company. In the theater, behind the stage, the passage connecting to the green rooms has a shrine to Elvis Presley, full of his pictures. This means that actors before they come on the stage, receive the benediction from God Elvis.

Actors preparing for A Tryst with destiny, Washington DC, USA - S. Deepak, 2012
Actors preparing for A Tryst with destiny, Washington DC, USA - S. Deepak, 2012

Washington DC, USA: I find the internal transformation process of how actors change and become someone else, very interesting. I think that in this transformation, the psychological process is more important, more than the external makeup and costumes. Today's images are of actors getting ready for the play "A tryst with destiny" written and directed by Amita Deepak Jha about the relationships between Gandhi, Nehru and Jinnah against the backdrop of India's independence struggle.
