Happy person - Persona felice -

Guwahati, Assam, India: That young man was part of the Dev Puja folk dance from Karnataka in the India Youth Festival. His role was not important, he just had to stand on one side of the stage with a temple prayer-column. His face expressed joy. Standing at his place, he moved in rhythm with the main dancers on the stage. To find happiness in whatever we get from life, is that something that we are born with or it is something that we choose to be?

Karnataka, India: In the north-east of India, Shakti (femminine power) is worshipped in different forms of the mother goddess such as Durga, Lakshmi, Saraswati and Kali. In Karnataka in south India, the religious folk dance "Puja Kunitha" includes different forms of worship of mother goddess that are very similar to the rituals in the north-east. Today's images have the representations of goddess Kali in Karnataka's Puja Kunitha dance, expressing anger and destruction.

Karnataka, India: Gaurava people of north Karnataka worship Shiva in their folk dance "Gauravara Kanita". In this dance, the dancers wear caps made of bear hair (Indian sloth bear). Tribal communities have beliefs, myths and customs linked with nature, animals and birds. However with the disappearing forest cover, the number of Indian bears is reducing, and traditions of tribal communities are being forced to change.

Shravan-Belagola, Karnataka, India: Lost in the prayers to Bahubali, he seemed very calm and serious. The statue of Bahubali is so high that it was not easy to get both of them in the same picture frame. In the end I took a picture from an angle, that does not properly express the feelings of his devotion!

Cows & egrets - Mucche e aironi -

Cattle egrets, Basavakalyan, Karnataka, India - images by Sunil Deepak, 2013
Cattle egrets, Basavakalyan, Karnataka, India - images by Sunil Deepak, 2013

Basavakalyan, Karnataka, India: With the cattle, you often see the egrets (Bubulcus ibis) who eat ticks and insects from their bodies. This is an example of the inter-connections between the living beings in the nature. Today's market-centred culture is destroying this delicate balance. Publicity like "Use antiseptic liquid to clean your home", "Use pesticides to increase your crops" exploits the human fears and wish for money and in the process kills bacteria, insects etc. thereby creating new dangers for humanity - for example, the disappearance of honey bees from different parts of the world or the rapidly decreasing vultures in India.

Dr Ambedkar statue, Humnabad, Karnataka, India - images by Sunil Deepak, 2013
Dr Ambedkar statue, Humnabad, Karnataka, India - images by Sunil Deepak, 2013

Humnabad, Karnataka, India: Baba saheb means Dr Bhimrao Ramji Ambedkar, whose statues are common in the small towns of Karnataka and who had written the constitution of independent India. We were researching on violence in the community and repeatedly we came across the different kinds of discriminations prevalent in our societies. Discriminations of gender, caste, religion and so many other things that divide our communities. I often asked myself if the dreams of Baba saheb for a non discriminating India would ever come true!

Humnabad, Karnataka, India: Baba saheb significa dott.

Bidar, India: "Nanak Jhira ji Saheb gurudwara" commemorates the journey by Sikh Guru Nanak and the discovery of a sweet water spring in this place. Whole of India shares beliefs like this with places that have stories about journey of a holy person, water springs and other elements of nature.

Humnabad, India: When I saw the drum in the temple, I thought that first the "machine" made the drummer redundant, and one day "digital" will make the drum redundant when they will record the drum and play it on their mobiles.

Bidar, Karnataka, India: Inside the fort, in the lower part surrounding the lake, their are farmers' fields. When I saw their buffaloes grazing amidst the ruins, it felt as if they were are not just lifeless crumbling walls kept for the tourists, but history was still alive in them.
