Shravana Belagola, Karnataka, India: Bhagwan Bahubali was second son of first Teerthankar of Jain, and fight with his elder brother led to his renouncement of the world. On the way to the temple at the top of Vindyagiri, there are statues depicting this story.

श्रवण बेलगोल, कर्नाटक, भारतः भगवान बाहुबली गोमटेश्वर प्रथम जैन तीर्थंकर वृषभनाथ के दूसरे पुत्र और अयोध्यापति भरत के छोटे भाई थे. बड़े भाई से युद्ध करना पड़ा तो जगत से विरक्त हो गये और तपस्या करने लगे. विंध्यागिरी पर्वत पर चढ़ते समय रास्ते में इसी कहानी को दिखाती मूर्तियाँ दिखती हैं.

Shravana Belagola, Karnataka, India: The well known statue of Bhagwan Mahavir requires a steep climb. If you don't feel upto it, you can find carriers. And, if the climb makes you feel tired, a view of the pond and greenery below will sooth your eyes and heart.

White ibis - Ibis bianco - श्वेत इबिस

Srirangapatnam, India: White ibis in Ranganathittu bird sanctuary. In older times, Egyptians believed that ibis represented moon god and called it Thoth. During a visit in Egypt, our guide had told us ibis is found only on Nile river and if taken away, it dies.

I had already seen red ibis in London zoo. So, whatever you hear from the guides, you have to take it with a pinch of salt.

श्रीरंगापट्नम, भारतः रँगनाथिट्टू पक्षी अभ्यारण में श्वेत इबिस पक्षी जिसे स्थानीय भाषा में बज्जू कहते हैं. इबिस को प्राचीन मिस्र में चँद्र देवता का रूप माना जाता था और थोथ नाम से इसकी पूजा होती थी. जब मिस्र गया था तो हमारे गाईड ने बताया था कि इबिस केवल मिस्र में नील नदी में होता है, और इसे बाहर ले जाओ तो यह जीवित नहीं रहता.

पहले एक बार लंदन के चिड़ियाघर में लाल इबिस को देखा था और अब रँगनाथिट्टू में श्वेत इबिस को. यानि, गाईडों की बातों पर हमेशा भरोसा नहीं किया जा सकता.

Srirangapatnam, India: Ibis bianchi nel parco protetto di Ranganathittu. In antico Egitto, ibis era considerato una manifestazione del dio della luna, chiamato Thoth. Durante un viaggio in Egitto, il nostro guida ci aveva raccontato che ibis si trova solo lungo il fiume Nilo e se portato via, muore.

Avevo già visto ibis rossi nello zoo di Londra.Penso che bisogna prendere con le molle tutto quello che viene raccontato dalle guide turistiche!

Ice candy - Ghiaccioli - बर्फ के गोले

Bologna, Italy: Taking the dog out for his walk is a problem. When he pulls, I feel that I am going to slip and break some bones. Bright red berries under the snow remind of ear rings of a pretty girl getting ready for the new year party. I think that people selling ice-candies would have an easy job here, just pluck a leaf from the tree, pour on it the coloured sugary solution, and ice candy is ready for licking!

बोलोनिया, इटलीः अपने कुत्ते के साथ बर्फ़ में सैर को निकलने की आफत है. जब वह खींचता है तो लगता है कि अभी फ़िसले और हड्डी टूटेगी. कभी लाल रंग की बेरियों को देख कर "गिरा है किसी का झुमका" की याद आती है. कभी पत्तों पर जमी बर्फ को देख कर सोचता हूँ कि यहाँ रंग बिरंगे बर्फ के गोले बेचने वाले का काम कितना आसान हो जाता. सीधा पेड़ से पत्ता तोड़ो, उस पर रंगीन चाशनी डालो, चूसने के लिए गोला तैयार!

Bologna, Italia: Portare il cane per il passeggio è un problema. Quando lui tirà ho paura di scivolare e rompere qualche osso. Le palline rosse di un albero mi fanno pensare agli orecchini di una ragazza che si prepara per la festa di capo d'anno. La neve sugli alberi mi fa pensare ai ghiaccioli. Sarebbe bello prendere una foglia con la neve, spruzzare sopra un po' di liquido colorato e dolce, e mangiarli!

Snow scarf - Sciarpa di neve - बर्फीले मफ़लर

Bologna, Italy: Over the past days I had been presenting pictures from my India travels. I still have many pictures to show from that journey, but in the meantime, here are some pictures from the recent snowfall in Italy. Today's pictures show snow scarfs, caps and clothes designed by nature to protect from the two young women from the cold.

बोलोनिया, इटलीः पिछले बहुत से दिनों से भारत यात्रा की तस्वीरें दिखा रहा था. हालाँकि उस यात्रा की अभी बहुत सी अन्य तस्वीरें दिखानी बाकी हैं, लेकिन जायका बदलने के लिए बीच में इन दिनों की इटली में हिमपात की तस्वीरें. आज की तस्वीरें में बर्फ के बनाये कपड़े और टोपियाँ, जो दो युवतियों के खुले बदन को सर्दी से बचाने के लिए प्रकृति ने रचे हैं.

Bologna, Italia: Ultimamente ho presentato molte immagini dal mio viaggio in India. Ho ancora molte immagini da presentare da quel viaggio, ma in tanto vorrei presentare qualche immagine dalla nevicata di questi giorni. Le immagini di oggi riguardano i vestiti di neve disegnati dalla natura per proteggere le due fanciulle dal freddo polare.

Insects - Insetti - मकोड़े

Karnataka, India: I had seen beautiful pictures close-ups of insects on internet and I wanted to try something like that. During my last visit to India, I tried it many times without much success. My three best efforts are presented here, though they are very ordinary. Friends told me that such photography requires special macro lenses.

कर्नाटक, भारतः इंटरनेट पर कई बार कीड़े मकोड़ों की टेलीलैंस से खींची सुंदर तस्वीरें देखने को मिलती हैं, मैं भी देखना चाहता था कि क्या इस तरह की तस्वीर खींच सकता हूँ या नहीं. पिछली भारत यात्रा में मैंने इसकी बहुत कोशिश की, उनमें से सबसे अच्छी तीन तस्वीरें प्रस्तुत है. इनसे आप यह समझ सकते हैं कि इस तरह की तस्वीरों लिए मेक्रो वाले विषेश कैमरे की आवश्यकता होती, मेरे जैसे समान्य कैमरे से इन तस्वीरों में वह बात नहीं आ पाती!

Karnataka, India: Avevo visto delle foto bellissime degli insetti sull'internet e volevo provare a scattare simili foto. Durante il viaggio in India, l'ho provato ma senza grande successo. Le tre foto migliori sono presentate qui, ma non sono un gran ché. Mi hanno detto che per scattare questo tipo di foto servono macchine fotografiche con le lenti macro.

Yellow flowers - Fiori gialli - पीले फ़ूल

Mysore, India: Apparently we are conscious, but most of our days just rush by. Often, we hardly see the life surrounding us, people, relationships, nature. Images remind us if we stop for a moment and really look at things, we are surrounded by miracles. Look at these yellow flowers and tell me if you don't see a miracle there?

Mysore, India: Apparentemente siamo svegli, ma la maggior parte delle nostre giornate scivolano via in fretta. Spesso, non vediamo la vita che ci circonda - persone, rapporti, natura. Karnataka, India: Every time I start looking for pictures for the blog, I never know what new idea is going to come. Today when I first saw the image of icecream cones, I had to think for a while about the theme where it could fit. Finally the theme idea came - "same but different". Tell me do you like it?

Karnataka, India: In the giant god statue placed in the centre of a road-crossing or the mosque by the roadside or in the church mass, everywhere I could see India's love for strong colours.

Chamundi temple - Tempio di Chamundi - चामुण्डी मंदिर

Mysore, India: Not far from Mysore, on a hill there is temple of Chamundeshwari, a fierce manifestation of Goddess Durga. When we arrived there, the temple was closed, so we could only see it from outside. The view of Mysore city from the top of the hill is beautiful.

मैसूर, भारतः मैसूर से थोड़ी दूर पहाड़ी पर प्राचीन चामुण्डेश्वरी देवी का मंदिर है, जिन्हें दुर्गा का प्रचण्ड रूप मानते हैं. जब हम पहुँचे तो मंदिर बंद था, इसलिए उसे बाहर से ही देख पाये. पहाड़ी से मैसूर शहर का विहंगम दृश्य देखा जा सकता है.

Mysore, India: Non lontano da Mysore, su una collina c'è il tempio di Chamundi, una forma particolarmente agguerrita della dea Durga. Quando siamo arrivati il tempio era chiuso e abbiamo dovuto guardarlo solo da fuori. Dalla collina, si può vedere tutta la città di Mysore.

Tiger of Mysore - Tigre del Mysore - मैसूर का चीता

Srirangapatnam, India: In 1782, Tipu Sultan became the ruler of Mysore. British tried many times, but couldn't defeat him and he was called "Tiger of Mysore". In 1799, British tried again, supported by armies of Nizam of Hyderbad and King of Trevancore. Tipu had the support of French army, but he lost and died. Imagine, if Tipu had won that battle, India could have been part of French empire rather than the British empire and history would have been different. William Dalrymple has written about this war in his book "White Mughal". Today's picture show Jama Masjid mosque built by Tipu in his capital, Srirangapatnam.

श्रीरंगापट्नम, भारतः १७८२ में मैसूर राज्य का शासन टीपू सुल्तान के हाथ में आया. अँग्रेज़ों ने कई बार कोशिश की, पर टीपू ने उनकी कोशिशों को नाकाम कर दिया जिसके लिए उन्हें "मैसूर का चीता" कहा जाता था. १७९९ में अँग्रेज़ी फौज ने फ़िर हमला किया, हैदराबाद के निज़ाम और ट्रवनकोर के राजा से मिल कर, दूसरी ओर टीपू ने फ्राँस की सेना का सहारा लिया था. टीपू शहीद हुए और अंग्रेज़ो का शासन पूरे दक्षिण भारत में फ़ैल गया. सोचिये कि अगर टीपू न हारते तो शायद भारत, अँग्रेज़ी साम्राज्य के बदले फ्राँसिसी साम्राज्य का हिस्सा बन जाता. इतिहास कुछ और ही होता. विलियम डारलिम्पल ने अपनी किताब "सफ़ेद मुगल" में इसका बढ़िया विवरण दिया है. आज की तस्वीरों में मैसूर राज्य की राजधानी श्रीरंगापट्नम में टीपू द्वारा बनवायी जामा मस्ज़िद.

Colourless temple - Tempio senza colori - बेरंग मंदिर

Srirangapatnam, India: The ancient city of Srirangapatna is situated on an island in Kaveri river. While going around southern part of Karnataka, I felt that they preferred strong colours in everything - in their homes, in temples, in statues, in their clothes. So I was surprised to see the almost colourless temple in Srirangapatnam, dedicated to Lord Rangnath (Lord of colours).

This temple is a stop over for pilgrims going to Sabrimala, and these men wearing black clothes can be easily identified.


श्रीरंगापट्नम, भारतः श्रीरंगापट्नम शहर कावेरी नदी के एक द्वीप पर बसा है. दक्षिण कर्नाटक में घूमा तो मुझे लगा कि वहाँ घरों, मंदिरों, मूर्तियों, लोगों के कपड़ों, सबके रंग बहुत तीखे होते हैं, इसलिए जब श्रीरंगापट्नम के प्रसिद्ध रंगनाथ स्वामी मंदिर को देखा तो थोड़ा अचरज हुआ कि कावेरी नदी के किनारे बने श्री रंगनाथ के नाम पर बने मंदिर में अन्य मंदिरों जैसे तेज रंग नहीं, बल्कि लगभग रंग विहीन है.

यहाँ शबरीमाला तीर्थयात्रा जाने वाली बसें रास्ते में रुकती हैं, जिनमें यात्रा करने वाले काले वस्त्र पहने हुए पुरुष आसानी से पहचाने जाते हैं.

Srirangapatnam, India: L'antica città di Srirangapatnam è situata su un'isola del fiume Kaveri. Mentre giravo il sud dello stato di Karnataka, pensavo che le case, i templi, le statue, i vestiti delle persone, sono tutte con i colori molto forti, per cui mi ha un po' sorpreso il tempio di Ranganath, quasi senza colori. Questo tempio è dedicato al dio dei colori.

Questo tempio è anche una fermata essenziale per i pellegrini che vanno a Sabrimala, e gli uomini sono facilmente identificabili per i loro vestiti neri.

Red vegetables - Verdure rosse - लाल सब्जियाँ

Srirangapatnam, India: Sunlight light filtering through orange and red coloured plastic sheets, gave a red glow to everything.

श्रीरंगापट्नम, भारतः संतरी और लाल तरपालों से छन कर आती धूप ने सब्जियों और सब्ज़ी बेचने वाले दोनो पर अबीर की बारिश कर दी थी. (संजय, सचमुच कल की तस्वीरों में पंच नहीं थी, :-) हालाँकि तीसरी तस्वीर मुझे अच्छी लगी थी.)
