The morning light - सुबह की रोशनी

I love Piazza della repubblica (the Republic square) in Rome. It is huge and some elaborate statues of greek gods on two sides. I love the symmetry of the two churches on one side and the pink of the buildings on the other side. In the morning light, after the rain, everything is even more beautiful.

रोम का गणतंत्र चौबारा, यानि "प्यात्सा देल्ला रिपुब्बलिका" बहुत सुंदर और भव्य है. रात की बारिश के बाद, सुबह की रोशनी में कोने पर बने दो गिरजाघरों का संतुलित भवननिर्माण इसकी सुंदरता बढ़ाता है. दूसरी ओर, भवनों के गुलाबी रंग, उसी सुबह की रोशनी में मनोरम लगते हैं.

Sad - उदास मन

Every year I am supposed to go to Geneva for the annual world health assemblee that brings together ministries of health from all over the world. After so many years, it is just a chore and not much pleasure. However, this year, I was looking forward to it as the chief guest was going to be Prince Charles and I wanted to hear him.

But on the first day of the assemblee, the death of Dr Lee, the director general of World Health Organisation was announced and it left me shocked. I had the opportunity to meet him a couple of times and he had been so helpful. Last time, he had taken out his old pictures from his drawer to show them to me. He died a few hours before his inaguration speech to the assemblee.

Today's pictures are from the United Nations building in Geneva.

हर वर्ष मई के महीने में दुनिया के सभी देशों के स्वास्थ्य मंत्री एकत्रित होते हैं जेनेवा में स्थापित संयुक्त राष्ट्र संघ के भवन में, जब विश्व स्वास्थ्य सभा का आयोजन होता है. पिछले दस सालों से हर वर्ष इस सभा में भाग लेना जाना पड़ता है. इस बार गया था तो सोच रहा था कि इण्लैंड के प्रिंस चार्लस का भाषण होना है, उन्हें देखने का मौका मिलेगा. सभा के पहले दिन ही सुबह सभा प्रारम्भ होने से कुछ देर पहले मालूम चला कि उसी दिन सुबह विश्व स्वास्थ्य संघ के प्रमुख डा. जोंग वूक ली का देहांत हो गया तो सन्न रह गया. डा. ली दो वर्ष पहले ही इस पद पर नियुक्त हुए थे और उनसे कुछ बार मिलने और बात करने का मौका मिला था. पिछली बार मिलने गया था तो एक काम की परेशानी में था और उन्होने तुरंत उसे सुलझाने का आश्वासन दिया था और फ़िर अपना वचन निभाया भी था. बस मन उदास हो गया.

Waiting for enlightenment - मोक्ष की अभिलाषा

American journalist, Judith Levine became famous a couple of years ago for her book, "Harmful to minors". In this book, she wrote about the dangers of excessive protection of american teenagers from the different aspects of life. American conservatives fiercely criticised that book feeling that she was advocating paedophilia.

A few months ago Levine has decided to do a new experiment - to live a year without buying. All the usual things that we don't actually need for our survival but we buy because of advertisements or depression or lonliness or whatever, she is going to do without. So no clothes, no music, no films, no travels, no books, no gifts. She feels that the idea of growth and economy based on consumerism is going to destroy mankind one day. Perhaps a new book will come out when she is done with this experiment.

I was thinking, what is so radical about this experiment? Our sadhus do it for their whole lives! But then thinking of the few yogis and sadhus, I had met, I thought it was not true. I thought that they were not free from desires. Perhaps this is no longer the age of Paramhans Ramkrishna? Or perhaps, I am not yet ready to meet the true yogi?

अमरीकी पत्रकार जूडिथ लेवाईन को प्रसिद्धी मिली थी उनकी पुस्तक हार्मफुल टू माइनरस् (Harmful to minors) के लिए. वह लिखती हैं अमरीकी साप्ताहिक सेवेन डेज़ (Seven Days) के लिए. पिछले वर्ष उन्होने कुछ नया करने की सोची और कहा कि मैं एक साल तक कुछ नहीं खरीदूँगी, न कपड़े, न संगीत, न कोई पुस्तक, न कोई यात्रा का टिकट, न क्रिसमस की भेंट. उनका सोचना था कि भोगकर्ता संस्कृति जिसमें विकास का अर्थ है खरीदो, और खरीदो, हमारी विचार शक्ती को बिगाड़ चुकी है. इस अनुभव पर फ़िर वह शायद एक किताब भी लिखें.

सोच रहा था कि हमारे साधू तो यह विचार सदियों से अपना रहे हैं, मोक्ष की अभिलाषा में. हालाँकि मैं बहुत से योगी/साधू आदि को नहीं जानता पर जो भी मिले, उन्हें मैंने लालच से मुक्त नहीं पाया. शायद परमहँस रामकृष्ण जैसे योगीयों का समय जा चुका है या फ़िर मुझमें ही कुछ कमी है कि सच्चे योगी को मिलने लायक नहीं हुआ हूँ ?

Ghosts of the ruins - खँडहरों के प्रेत

Ilha do Mozambique reminds me of Gurudutt's film "Sahib, Bibi aur Ghulam", with all the ruins of old houses. You can see that they must have been magnificent houses, built with love by their owners. Now plants grow on the walls and sun peeps in thorugh holes in the wall left from cannon balls of the civil war.

The first time I had been to Ilha, the ruins were everywhere. It was strange to walk on the street and see the sea on both sides through the gaping holes in the houses. It made it somehow more tolerable for me, it seemed to me as if sea was the balm put on lacerated souls of those houses.

Today most of the ruins are gone, replaced by anonymous cement and steel blocks that are sign of economic growth and prosperity. They are worse than the cannons, they don't allow the balm of sea to pass through and heal.

इल्हा दो मोज़ाम्बीक के खँडहर देख कर गुरुदत्त की फिल्म "साहब बीबी और गुलाम" की छोटी बहू की याद आ गयी.

जहाँ आज पेड़ उग आये हैं वहाँ कभी किसी ने प्यार की बातें की होंगी, साथ हँसते बातें करते हुए बच्चे बाहर घूमने के लिए तैयार हुए होंगे, सजे धजे मेहमानों का गृहस्वामिनी ने स्वागत किया होगा, गुस्से से क्षुप्त हो कर कोई नाराज हो कर बैठा होगा, दर्द से चिल्लाया होगा कोई ...

पुराने घरों के खँडहर अगर आप को अच्छे लगते हैं तो इल्हा आप को बहुत पसंद आयेगा. २० साल तक चलने वाले गृह युद्ध ने जाने कितने लोगों को मारा, कितने घर नष्ट किये!

Masks - मुखौटे

As the summer arrives, Bologna slowly wakes from its winter slumber with a nice and long summer festival that goes on till mid-September. Film festivals, dances, music, plays, there is so much choice everyday and most of it is free.

For many events, volunteers play a big role. They make announcements in the local newspapers that they are looking for volunteers who can come for rehearsals for a few days. Apart from the interest and the time, you need some resources to invest on your dresses. If you like, this gives you an opportunity to be an actor or dancer, meet many new persons with similar interests and have fun.

This year the festival started on last Saturday with a representation of a local war with a neighbour king in the city square. For the fight sequences they had cordoned off an area but rest was all mixed up with spectators. I liked a group of young people who were wearing nice masks and walking on stilts.

गरमियों के साथ बोलोनिया शहर जाग जाता है. फिल्म समारोह, नृत्य, नाटक, हर सप्ताह कुछ नया होता रहता है. इस वर्ष का गृष्म समारोह का प्रारम्भ कुछ दिन पहले हुआ १३६२ में हुई एक लड़ाई के नाटक से. इस नाटक के लिए मँच नहीं था, लोगों के बीचों बीच स्वयंसेवक अभिनेता पुराने जमाने की पोशाकें पहने घूम रहे थे.

अक्सर यहाँ के स्थानीय अखबारों में ऐसे विज्ञापन निकलते रहते हैं कि फलाने नाटक समारोह के लिए स्वयंसेवकों की खोज हो रही है. अगर आप के पास समय है और पोशाक बनवाने के लिए पैसे हैं तो वर्कशाप में जाईये, सबके साथ मिल कर देखिये, सीखीये कि क्या करना होगा, कैसे करना होगा और बस नाटक तैयार हो गया.

मुझे इस नाटक में सबसे अधिक पसंद आये लम्बे बाँसों पर सवार मुखौटे लगाये नाचने वाले. इसी की दो तस्वीरें प्रस्तुत हैं.

Seaside - सागर किनारे

I prefer taking pictures early in the morning or in the evening. Strong daylight makes the pictures seem flatter. Also because, I am travel for work and mornings and evenings are usually the time when I can play photographer!

These pictures are from Mozambique. The fishermen's village was close to where we were staying. I had woken up early in the morning and was walking along the sea, absorbed in clicking pictures, when suddenly I realised that there was a row of persons sitting along the edge of water. I thought they were looking at me apprehensively and I was a little embarassed. It reminded me of travelling by trains in India, when there is a row of people sitting next to the railway lines for their morning needs.

दिन की धूप में तस्वीरों की गहराई कम हो जाती है, जबकि सुबह और शाम को रोशनी कम होती है जिससे तस्वीरें अधिक सुंदर आती हैं. आज की तस्वीरें हैं मोज़ाम्बीक से, जिन्हें खींचने के लिए मैं सुबह सुबह उठा था. मछुआरों का यह गाँव हमारे होटल के करीब ही था. समुद्र किनारे चलते चलते मेरा ध्यान तस्वीरें खींचने में था, लग रहा था कि जगह सुनसान हो. तभी दिखाई दिये वे लोग जो सुबह के अँधेरे में सागर किनारे उकुड़ु बैठे थे और मेरी तरफ देख रहे थे. भारत में रेल यात्रा की याद आ गयी. सुबह उठो तो रेल की पटरियों के साथ ऐसी ही लाईन लगी होती है धोतियाँ ऊपर उठाये उकुड़ु बैठे लोगों की.

दो नये भारतीय फोटोब्लोग देखे जो मुझे बहुत अच्छे लगे, कल्याण वर्मा का जँगली जीवन का चिट्ठा बहुत सुंदर है. दूसरा चिट्ठा जिसकी तस्वीरें मुझे अच्छी लगीं है सिबगुवर्ल्ड का.

Not playing by the rules - नियमों के बाहर

There are criteria that define a good picture. If you are serious about photography, it is important to learn the rules.

Yet, at the same time, I feel that photography, like all other arts, can also be very subjective. I mean, I can have my own ideas of what is a good picture and it may not necessarily follow the established views of a "good picture"?

Blurred pictures is one such area. But occasionally when the subject suddenly moves, and part of the picture is blurred, to me it may still seem like a good picture even if no one would publish it! Viva for individualism and experimenting. What do you think? Do you like the pictures below?

कल की तस्वीरों के बारे में पंकज ने लिखा है, "तीसरे नम्बर वाली सबसे अच्छी है. बस खिंचते समय थोडा ध्यान रखा होता और पीछे की इमारत का उपरी हिस्सा ना कटता तो मजा आ जाता ". यह बात अगर आप फोटोग्राफी की कोई भी पुस्तक पढ़ेंगे तो वहाँ पायेंगे, कि जहाँ तक हो सके, भवनों, वस्तुओं और व्यक्तियों को पूरा लेने की कोशिश कीजिये. यानि अच्छी तस्वीरों को मापने के कई नियम हैं और इन नियमों को जानना आवश्यक है.

पर मैं यह भी सोचता हूँ कि फोटो चित्रकारी की तरह एक कला है और कभी कभी नियमों से बाहर जाना मुझे अच्छा लगता है. जैसे कि वह नियम जिसके अनुसार फोटो को ठीक से फोकस करना चाहिये. कभी कभी किसी तस्वीर में कुछ हिल जाता है और वह ठीक से फोकस नहीं होती, पर फ़िर भी मुझे वह तस्वीर अच्छी लगती है. आज प्रस्तुत हैं ऐसी ही कुछ तस्वीरें जो कुछ हिला होने और ठीक से फोकस न होने के बावजूद मुझे अच्छी लगती हैं.

Trying another Angle - दृष्टिकोण बदल कर देखिये

Ferrara, Italy: Ferrara is a beautiful city with a castle and wonderful medieval houses. While taking pictures of buildings, I like to experiment with angles and zooms. Having a digital camera with a huge memory stick (1 GB) means that I can take up to 500 pictures, so it is easy to experiment. Like in the pictures below, I first tried a vertical view so that I could include the couple sitting under the statue in the picture. The second is the one that I like less. The last one below is the one I like most.




फेरारा, इटलीः तस्वीर लेते समय मुझे कैमरे का कोण बदल कर विभिन्न कोणों से तस्वीर लेना अच्छा लगता है. आजकल के डिजिटल कैमरे जिनमें अगर एक अच्छा वाला स्मृति कार्ड लगा हो तो इस तरह अभ्यास करने में कोई खर्चा भी नहीं होता. फैरारा बहुत सुंदर शहर है. वहाँ के किले की विभिन्न कोणों से ली गयी इन तस्वीरों में से मुझे तीसरे नम्बर वाली, यानि सबसे नीचे वाली तस्वीर पसंद है.

Light & shadows - रोशनी और छाया

People sitting in the darkness or relative darkness with strong light coming from one direction, makes for very nice picture composition in my opinion. If you don't use a flash, it creates areas of over-exposure and underexposure in the picture that give a depth to the faces, along with a play of light and shadows. Caravaggio, the fifteenth century Italian painter is famous for his chiaro-scuro, the play of light and shadows and I like his paintings very much. Perhaps, that is the reason why I like these pictures. The first picture is from a waiting room of a village clinic in Mozambique while the second picture is from a women's group meeting in a room, not very far from Kathmandu in Nepal.



छाया में बैठे लोगों की तस्वीरें लेना जिसमें एक तरफ से तेज़ रोशनी आ रही हो, मुझे बहुत अच्छा लगता है. ऐसे में मेरे विचार में अच्छी फोटो बिना फ्लेश का इस्तेमाल किये बिना आती है ताकि रोशनी और छाया से चेहरों के भाव और भी गहरे हो जायें. इस तरह की तस्वीरों में मुझे पँद्रहवीं शताब्दी के प्रसिद्ध इतालवी चित्रकार कारावाज्यो के कियारो ओस्कूरो जैसा प्रभाव लगता है. यह दोनो तस्वीरें मुझे इसीलिए अच्छी लगती हैं. पहली तस्वीर मोज़ाम्बीक में खींची थी और दूसरी नेपाल में.

Clouds in the blue sky - बादल और नीला आसमान

Nampula, Mozambique - April 2006: Each place has its own light that gives a particular shade to the picture. People often say Tuscany in Italy has beautiful light. Nampula in northern Mozambique is close to the equator and there the sky after the rains looked realy beautiful. Sitting in the back of the car, looking up I could daydream and think that the fluffy white clouds were fat sheep trying to run away from the shepherd.




नमपूला, मोज़ाम्बीक, अप्रैल २००६: हर देश, शहर की रोशनी अलग होती है जो हर तस्वीर को अपना रँग देती है. उत्तरी मोज़ाम्बीक में नमपूला इक्वेटर से बहुत अधिक दूर नहीं और बारिश के बाद धुला हुआ आकाश का नीलापन बहुत मनोरम लगता था. आकाश में तैरते रुई के फुहासों से बादल भेड़ों जैसे लगते जो चरानेवाले की नज़र बचा कर इधर उधर भागने की ताक में हों. आज की तस्वीरें बादलों और आसमान के इसी खेल पर हैं.

Egyptian Policemen and their camels - ऊँठ पर सवार पुलिस

Giza, Egypt, May 2006: I love taking pictures of the men in uniform - policemen, military personnel, traffic policemen... but usually they don't like when they see me taking their pictures. However, near a tourist place, usually there is no problem to click their pictures since it seems that you are taking picture of the place. That is how I took all these pictures of Egyptian policemen on their camels. With their white uniform, I think that they make a nice contrast with the dark brown shades of the desert background.






गीज़ा, मिस्र, मई २००६: वर्दी पहने पुलिस वालों और मिलेट्री के व्यक्तियों की तस्वीर खींचना मुझे बहुत अच्छा लगता है. पर अक्सर पुलिस वाले अगर मुझे अपनी तस्वीर खींचते देखते हैं तो नाराज हो जाते हैं. पर किसी पर्यटन स्थल पर पुलिस वाले दिख जाएँ तो कठिनाई दूर हो जाती है, पर्यटन स्थल की तस्वीरों के बहाने कुछ भी तस्वीर खिंचों, उन्हे पता नहीं लगता. गीज़ा के पिरामिडों के पास यही हुआ. वहीं की ऊँठ पर सवार पुलिस की कुछ तस्वीरें प्रस्तुत हैं.

Setting sun and the fountain - डूबता सूरज और फुव्वारा

Cairo, Egypt, May 2006: Al Azhar park on the hill facing the Cittadel overlooks the skyline of old Cairo with many minarets of mosques rising up in the sky. The cool greens of the grass and the plants contrasts with the hot fire of desert colours all around.

Al Azhar was a garbage dump for many centuries, now with the small lake, toy train and fancy restaurants, that old garbage probably serves as fertilizer for the lovely flowers all around. Here is the fountain in the middle of the lake caught with the evening sun.

The next is the lobby of Grand Hyatt hotel and the evening view of Nile.
