Archimedes' bath - Bagno di Archimede - आर्कीमिडीज़ का स्नान

Manchester, UK: A contemporary of emperor Ashoka in India, the Greek scientist Archimedes had discovered the way of measuring the volume of irregular-shaped objects by dipping them in water. There is a story that the idea came to him while he was in the bath tub. Thrilled by his discovery, he rose up from the tub and ran shouting "Eureka, Eureka" (I have found it), forgetting that he was nude. Today's images have a statue depicting that Eureka moment of Archimedes. Its sculptor is Thompson W. Dagnall.

मेनचेस्टर, ब्रिटेनः भारत के सम्राट अशोक के समकालीन यवनी वैज्ञानिक आर्कीमीडीज़ ने टेढ़े मेढ़े आकार की वस्तुओं के परिमाण को पानी में डुबो कर मापने का तरीका खोजा था. कहते हैं कि यह सिद्धांत उनके मन में तब आया जब वह एक टब में लेटे स्नान कर रहे थे. उस समय वह उल्लास से टब से उठ कर "यूरेका, यूरेका" (मिल गया) कहते हुए भागे, भूल गये कि वह निर्वस्त्र थे. आज की तस्वीरों की मूर्ति में उनके इसी यूरेका वाले क्षण को दिखाया गया है. मूर्ति के शिल्पकार है थोमप्सन डगनाल.

Old bridges - Ponti vecchi - पुराने पुल

London, UK: When new cities come up to replace the old ones, I love it when old but beautiful heritage buildings are saved and are integrated into the new. London docks is one such example. There, in between the gleaming skyscrappers, you can see old buildings and bridges, thus the thread between the old and the new histories is not broken.

लँडन, ब्रिटेनः जब पुराने शहर की जगह पर नये शहर बनते हैं तो पुराने सुन्दर भवनों आदि को नष्ट न होने देना और उन्हें नये में समन्वय करना मुझे बहुत अच्छा लगता है. लँडन की बँदरगाह पर ऐसा ही हुआ है. वहाँ नये चमकते गगनचुम्बी भवनों के बीच आप को पुराने भवन व पुल भी दिख जाते हैं, और पुराने तथा नये इतिहास का तार नहीं टूटता.

Londra, Inghilterra: Quando si costruiscono nuove città per sostituire quelle vecchie, mi piace quando i vecchi edifici storici e belli sono preservati e integrati nel nuovo contesto. Il porto di Londra ne è un esempio. Là tra i nuovi grattacieli luccicanti, potete vedere vecchie case e ponti, così il filo che collega la vecchia alla nuova storia non si rompe.

Forgotten people - Persone dimenticate - भूले लोग

London, England: One day we won't be there, for sometime people will remember us and then the dust of time will bury our memories, so to be forgotten awaits us all. Still if by chance some forgotten name comes out of the dust of time, it feels good. I felt a connection with William Peel when I saw his statue at the Marine Histroy museum in Greenwich near London. He was injured during the Indian soldiers' rebellion in Lucknow in 1857 and some time later died due to small pox. His forgotten grave must be there some where in a cemetery of Lucknow.

लँडन, ईंग्लैंडः एक न एक दिन हम नहीं रहेंगे, कुछ समय तक कुछ लोग हमें याद रखेंगे फ़िर समय की धूल उस याद को दबा देगी, यानि भुलाया जाना हम सब की नियती है. पर जब अचानक कभी समय की धूल से उठ कर कोई भूला बिसरा नाम उभरता है तो अच्छा लगता है. लँडन के पास ग्रीनविच में समुद्री संग्रहालय में यही हुआ जब विलियम पील की मूर्ति देखी. वह 1857 की भारतीय सिपाही क्राँती में लखनऊ में घायल हुए थे और उसके कुछ दिन बाद चेचक की वजह से मरे थे. सोचा कि उनकी कब्र अवश्य लखनऊ में कहीं भूली बिसरी शायद अब भी होगी.

Londra, Inghilterra: Un giorno non ci saremmo, per un po' alcuni si ricorderanno di noi e poi il polvere del tempo nasconderà tutto, per cui ci aspetta tutti di essere dimenticati. Mi piace quando qualche nome si riaffiora dalle polveri del tempo. Ho sentito un legame con William Peel quando ho visto la sua statua nel museo della storia marina a Greenwich vicino a Londra. Lui si era ferito durante la ribellione degli soldati indiani a Lucknow nel 1857 e poco tempo dopo morì a seguito di vaiolo. Ho pensato che forse la sua tomba dimenticata da tutti potrebbe ancora esserci in qualche cimitero a Lucknow.

Laughing mannequins - Manichini ridenti - खिलखिलाती पुतलियाँ

When I saw that laughing mannequin in a shop window in Cambridge, I remembered similar mannequins I had seen in Bangkok some years ago. I thought that they were sisters, separated when they were young and I wanted to unite them through the blog.

कैम्ब्रिज में एक दुकान की खिड़की में खिलखिला कर हँसती हुई पुतली की मूर्ति देखी तो कुछ वर्ष पहले बैँकाक में देखी इसी तरह से खिलखिलाती पुतलियों की याद आ गयी. सोचा शायद बहनें हों जो बचपन में बिछुड़ गयीं थीं, इसलिए सोचा कि उन्हें चिट्ठे पर तो मिलाया जा सकता है!

Quando ho visto il manichino della ragazza ridente in una vetrina a Cambridge, ho subito ricordato simili manichini visti a Bangkok alcuni anni prima. Ho pensato che potevano essere sorelle, separate quando erano bambine e ho voluto riunirle tramite il blog.

India's boat - La barca indiana - भारत की नाव

Cambridge, UK: So BJP has won. Over the last few weeks, during my travels, often persons of Indian origin and foreigners interested in India, talked about elections. These discussions had two main themes - one that only Modi government can bring development in India and the second that, Modi government will be a threat to minorities in India. Hardly anyone favoured Congress party in these discussions. With my wish that new government will work for progress of all Indians without discrimination, today's images have boats from a mosaic in an underground passage in Cambridge.

केम्ब्रिज, ब्रिटेनः भारतीय जनता पार्टी चुनाव जीती है. इन पिछले दिनों में विभिन्न जगहों पर भारतीय मूल के लोगों व भारत में दिलचस्पी लेने वाले विदेशियों से चुनाव के बारे में बात होती थी तो दो तरह की बातें होती थीं - पहली कि मोदी सरकार ही भारत में विकास ला सकती है, दूसरी कि मोदी सरकार से भारत के अल्पसंख्यकों को खतरा है - लेकिन काँग्रेस को फ़िर से मौका मिलना चाहिये, यह बात कहने वाले कम थे. नयी सरकार भारत के सभी नागरिकों को बिना भेदभाव के प्रगति और अच्छा जीवन दे, यही मेरी कामना है. आज की तस्वीरों में केम्ब्रिज से मोज़ाइक कला में नावें.

Cambridge, Gran Bretagna: Il partito BJP ha vinto le elezioni in India. Nelle ultime settimane, durante i miei spostamenti, avevo avuto molte discussioni con le persone di origine indiana e con gli stranieri interessati in India. Queste discussioni avevano due temi - il primo che solo il governo Modi potrà garantire sviluppo per l'India e il secondo, che il governo Modi sarà un pericolo per le minoranze in India - pochi auspicavano un ritorno del partito del congresso. Con l'augurio che il nuovo governo si adoperi per lo sviluppo di tutti gli indiani senza discriminazioni, le immagini di oggi sono di un mosaico da un sottopassaggio a Cambridge.
