उलान बातार, मँगोलिया: गंदान बुद्ध मंदिर और आश्रम पहले उलान बातार शहर के मध्य में था, पर 1838 में इसे हटा कर शहर के पास एक पहाड़ी पर ले गये. 1938 में जब रूस के सैनिकों ने मिल कर मँगोलिया में कम्यूनिस्ट क्राँती की, पाँच मंदिरो को नष्ट किया गया और बाकी भवनों में रूसी सिपाही रहने लगे. 1944 में मंदिर दौबारा खुला पर सरकारी नियंत्रण में. 1990 में जब देश कम्यूनिस्म से निकला तब मंदिर को भी स्वतंत्रता मिली और लोगों को बुद्ध धर्म की प्रार्थना करने की छूट. गंदान का सबसे बड़ा मंदर है जनराइसिग जिसमें २६ मीटर ऊँची करुणामय बुद्ध की मूर्ती है जो स्वर्ण पत्र से ढकी है. अपनी तस्वीरों में मुझे कबूतरों के लिए मक्की के दाने बेचने वाली बच्ची की तस्वीर बहुत अच्छी लगती है.
Ulaan Baatar, Mongolia: Gandan Monastery (Gandantegchenling) was originally in the centre of Ulaan Baatar, and shifted to a hill in 1838. It has a Mahayana Buddhist temple and different monastery buildings. In 1938, during the revolution, five temples were destroyed and Russian officers took over remaining buildings. In 1944, the temple was reopened under Government control. In 1990, the temple finally found freedom when the regime finished and people could be Buddhist again. The central temple, Janraisig (Chenresig) has a 26.5 meter tall copper statue gilded with gold, of Boddhisatva of compassion. Among all the pictures, I specially like the picture of the girl selling maize seeds for the pigeons.
