There is a saying, "If wishes were horses, beggers will ride" but I think that it was written when horses and horse-riding were common. Nowadays to be able to afford a horse, you need to be rich.
When I see horses, I always remember an event told to me by a distant relative, Ashok. I was about eight years old at that time, and Ashok was two years older to me. Their neighbours had a horse-cart. One day Ashok, while playing went to the horse and showing him his chest, picking up his nipple in his hand, pulling it towards the horse said, "Come horse, drink my milk". I don't know what made him do it. Any way, he said that the horse bit him on his chest. Even now, though I love horses, I am a little afraid to go near them, thinking that they may bite!

मुझे घोड़े बहुत अच्छे लगते हैं. अगर आप को घोड़ों को करीब से देखने का मौका मिला हो तो आप अवश्य समझते होंगे कि हर घोड़े का अपना व्यक्तितव, अपना स्वाभाव होता है. अंग्रेजी में कहावत है, "अगर आकांक्षाएँ घोड़े होतीं तो भिखारी उनकी सवारी करते" जो मुझे लगता है तब बनी होगी जब घोड़े आप थे और उन पर चढ़ने के लिए अमीर होना आवश्यक नहीं था. आजकल तो घोड़े रखना और पालना कोई पैसेवाला ही कर सकता है.
जब भी घोड़े देखता हूँ तो बचपन की एक सुनी हुई बात याद आ जाती है, जब करीब आठ साल का था. मुझसे दो साल बड़ा अशोक मेरी मौसी की ननंद का बेटा था, यानि कि, दूर का रिश्तेदार. उसका परिवार पुरानी दिल्ली में पुलबंगश की तरफ रहता था और उसके पड़ोसी के यहाँ एक इक्का था. एक दिन अशोक ने पड़ोसी के अस्तबल में घोड़े के सामने जा कर अपनी छाती दिखाई और बोला "ले घोड़े, दूध पी" और घास खा रहे घोड़े ने उसे छाती पर काट लिया. जाने सच बात थी या नहीं, पर तबसे घोड़ों के प्रति मन में थोड़ा सा डर बैठ गया. अब जब घोड़े देखता हूँ तो अच्छे तो लगते हैं पर मन में डर भी रहता है इसलिए उनके बहुत करीब नहीं जाता.
आज की तस्वीरों में उत्तरी इटली में बिबियोने के घोड़े, जहाँ से छुट्टियाँ बिता कर आया हूँ.
