Meghalaya, India: Barapaani (literally "Big waters") lake on the way from Guwahati to Shillong is called Umiam in Khasi language. It was created by building of a dam on Umiam river in 1964. A Khasi mythology story says that two sisters were coming down from the sky to earth, but one was lost on the way, and the river Umiam was created by the tears of the sister who reached the earth. Due to the rising population of Shillong and the cutting of the trees from the surrounding hills, lake pollution is increasing and because of the silt, its ground level is rising.
