Hero for a night -

I am in Bibione in the north-east of Italy for the holidays. Last week of holidays was dedicated to football. I have never been very keen on this game but people's enthusiasm was infectious. Since Bibione is full of German tourists, the night of the semifinals was a bit tense when Italy and Germany played. For the owners of the restaurants, there was some conflict, whether they should be displaying their joy and thus hurt their clients, the German tourists. Some of them found a way out by setting up separate rooms for Germans and Italians, where people could watch the match in their own groups.

That night, when the match finished, Italy had won and their joy was very public, however it was nothing compared to the pandemonium of last night after the finals. City administration had put up a giant tent with a giant screen for showing the match and it was full of Italians with their flag on their faces, chests, draped on their shoulders, in the colours of their hats.

And the horn blowing and fire crackers went on for the whole night. People were taking off their clothes and dancing, waving the Italian flag.

Yeet, this hero-worship is just for the night. The big football scandal with the magistrates digging up telephone conversations about match fixing is just behind the corner. And the public if fickle. Even during the match, when the Italian team didn't score a wining goal, there were some disgruntled fans singing, "Sapete soltanto rubare" (You only know how to steal). The scandal regarding Jidane was another reminder about the fickleness of hero-worship. According to Brazilian lip-readers, it seems that Matterazzi had said "figlio di puttana" (son of a whore) to earn that headbutt!

The joy after winning
