Hampi, Karnataka, India: The ruins of Vijaynagar empire are spread over a large area. Surrounded by a natural fort of boulders, the inhabitants of the ancient city must have faced the hot Indian summer with difficulty. A proof of this is in the parallel row of coloumns along the path that goes in near the entrance, where there must have been a covered passageway.
