Transformation - Trasformazione -

After more than a year, I finally want to share some images. They are about a moment of transformation, when the ordinary becomes magical. You are going somewhere and suddenly you see something colourful and strange and you stop in your tracks. If you are lucky and you have a camera with you, sometimes you manage to get an image of that fleeting moment. The images are from Delhi (India), Bologna (Italy) and Guwahati (India).

Folk music - Musica folk -

Assam Music Icons - Dr Bhupen Hazarika - Images by Sunil Deepak
Assam Music Icons - Jayanta Hazarika - Images by Sunil Deepak
Assam Music Icons - Mrs Protima Barua Pandey - Images by Sunil Deepak

Guwahati, Assam, India: Sometimes I wish that the Hindi-speaking north India had the kind of respect and pride that Assam has for its culture and art. Today's images have three cultural icons of Assam's folk and popular music: the multifaceted artist Dr Bhupen Hazarika, Jayanta Hazarika who in his short life could create so much popular music (he was younger brother of Dr Bhupen Hazarika) and the national award winner folk singer Mrs Protima Barua Pandey.

Free women - Donne libere -

Girl with Chihuahua by Elio Weschimps, Italy - Image by Sunil Deepak
Marla by Irving Dominick, USA - Image by Sunil Deepak
Dancing Girl, London, UK - Image by Sunil Deepak

There is pressure to conform in all societies. If you are a girl, the pressure is even more. Family and society put pressure on you to hide your natural self and to appear like the dominant role of women in your society. Today with education & economic liberty, it may have become a little easier for girls to be as they wish to be and resist the social pressure. Today's images are about art trying to express a similar feeling - "Girl with chihuahua" by Elio Weschimps from Italy, sculpture of his grand-daughter "Marla" by American folk artist Irving Dominick and a sculpture of a dancing girl from central London in UK.

Goiania, Brazil: On sunday nights the park in Tamandare square holds an art market. Artists from cities all around Goiania come here with their works. It is a place to buy art and to gossip with people who love art.

Milan, Italy: These days I am exploring art from the World Expo 2015 exhibition. Today the images are of "Guardians of food", an installation of 21 statues by Oscar winning art director Dante Ferretti. Like the 7 dwarfs of Snow White, these statues represent 7 groups of foods - Enolo (wine), Macedonia (fruits), Norcinello (poultry & meat), Fornero (bakery), Pasticcina (cakes & pastries) and Minestrello (soups). These statues welcome the visitors at the entrance gate. They are inspired from the works of 16th century Italian artist Giuseppe Arcimbaldo, known for making portraits with fruits, vegetables, fish, etc.

Padua, Italy: Padua in north Italy had the first European university. In the city, a place called Prato della valle (Valley meadow) is the largest square in Italy. It has a garden and a circular canal in its centre. Both sides of the canal are lined with statues of the famous personalities of the 17th century. Among them my favourite is the statue of the sculptor and architect Antonio Canova who is shown sculpting a statue. About 35 years ago when I had seen it for the first time, I had thought that it was the statue of a surgeon who is doing surgery on the head of his teacher. Since then I call it the statue of the zombie surgeon.

Bologna, Italy: Back in Bologna for holidays, I was curious to know which sculptor has been chosen this year for exhibiting his/her work in the IV November square? I went there and found that this year's sculptor is Leonardo Lucchi, whose works had been exhibited there a couple of years ago as well. Some of his works are new while some others I had seen earlier. Most of his statues seem to be floating in the air, only the tip of their toes are in touch with the ground. Children seemed fascinated by these floating statues.

Bologna, Italy: Yesterday I met a painter - Piero Gianfranceschi. He is an architect by profession and a painter for passion. He paints dreamland like pleasant worlds where colourful mango like shapes play an important role. You can see some examples of his art on his webpage. I love meeting such persons who are in some profession, but who build their parallel worlds for expressing their creativity, probably because I can see myself in them.

Patua paintings, Midnapur, West Bengal, India - Images by Sunil Deepak

Patua paintings, Midnapur, West Bengal, India - Images by Sunil Deepak

India: Midnapur district of West Bengal has a tradition of Patua artists who paint folk tales and then during marriages and festivals, travel in the villages with their paintings to sing those tales. Like other folk arts, even Patua artists need to grapple with poverty and the changing social context. Today's images have the paintings of artist Ms. Manimala Patua about the seven children of the first couple Pilchu Haram and Pilchu Burhi, who started the human race. This painting is exhibited in Manas Museum of Bhopal.

Guwahati, India: The lives of those who make traditional statues of gods and goddesses are not marked by hunger but they are not far from poverty. Then why do we wonder that our traditional arts are slowly disappearing?

Khalil Gibran statue, Goias, Brazil - Sunil Deepak, 2010
Munshi Prem Chand statue, Lucknow, India - Sunil Deepak, 2010
James Joyce statue, Dublin Ireland - Sunil Deepak, 2010

From ever since I can remember, I had always loved reading. Living other lives through imagined worlds of fiction, knowing about new philosophical ideas, understanding what do persons of other countries, languages and cultures think and why, all this was possible through the books. Today's images are of 3 authors from 3 continents, who were all born in the same period (around 1880s) and had become well known. Did they know each other, had they ever read each other's works, I do not know. But I am happy to bring them together in a literary meeting through my pictures - Khalil Gibran (Lebanese), Munshi Prem Chand (Indian) and James Joyce (Irish).

Pieta of Michaelangelo, Rome, Italy - Images by Sunil Deepak

In the sculpture "Pieta" by famous Italian artist Michelangelo, there is a sad Miriam with the body of her son Jesus in her arms. The original of this sculpture is in St. Peter's in Rome, where it is not easy to photograph as it is behind a glass. Today's images have 3 copies of "Pieta" - first is from Brazilian capital Brazilia, second is from Shillong in Meghalaya (India) and the third is from Verano cemetery in Rome (Italy).

Washington DC, USA: Looking different from other persons among whom you were born and live, and feeling different from persons who look like you, this is the subject of this art of American artist Roger Shimomura. In each painting he is there and these express his experience of being a Japanese-American. The paintings are from an exhibition in the Portrait museum.

Agarwala, Rabha and Sarma statues, Guwahati, Assam, India - Images by Sunil Deepak, 2014

Guwahati, Assam, India: Outside the state library there are 3 statues of persons linked with art, theatre, film and writing - Jyoti Prasad Agarwala, Bishnu Prasad Rabha and Phani Sarma. All the three were associated with the left-leaning Indian People's Theatre Association (IPTA). When I saw the statues I thought that only in the north-east of India we can give so much importance to cultural persons, in rest of India such respect is accorded only to political leaders.
