Girls - Bambine - बच्चियाँ

West Jaintia Hills district, Meghalaya, India: I like clicking pictures of children, especially when they do not know that someone is taking their pictures, and their expressions are natural. Once they know, often they make faces or they look very serious. Today's images have three close-ups of young girls.

Brahmaputra's son - Figlio di Brahmaputra - ब्रह्मपुत्र का पुत्र

Assam, India: We had gone to that island in the river Brahmaputra with a boat clinic. He had just come out of the river, mud coating his face and chest. Why did you cover yourself with mud, I asked him many times, but he did not answer.

असम, भारतः हम लोग ब्रह्मपुत्र नदी के उस द्वीप पर एक नाव क्लिनिक के साथ गये थे. वह तभी नदी से निकल रहा था, मुँह तथा छाती मिट्टी से लिपे हुए थे. क्यों लगायी इस तरह से मिट्टी, मैंने कई बार पूछा पर उसने उत्तर नहीं दिया.

Carrying babies - Portare bambini - बच्चे उठाना

North-East, India: In the big cities you can occasionally see young fathers carrying small babies. However in the villages, carrying small babies is exclusively a female responsibility. In villages if men carry a small baby then people question their masculinity. Today's images are from Nagaland, Assam and Meghalaya in the North-east and show a mother, a grand-mother and a sister carrying small babies.

उत्तरपूर्वी भारतः बड़े शहरों में आजकल नवयुवक पिता भी कभी कभी छोटे बच्चों को उठायें दिख जाते हैं लेकिन गाँवों में अभी भी छोटे बच्चे उठाना केवल स्त्रियों तथा लड़कियों का काम है. गाँवों में पुरुष या युवक छोटा बच्चा उठायें तो लोग उनकी मर्दानगी पर शक करते हैं. आज की तस्वीरों में नागालैंड, असम तथा मेघालय से क्रमशः एक माँ, एक नानी/दादी एवम एक बहन छोटे बच्चे को उठाये हुए है.

Nord-est, India: Nelle grandi città potete trovare qualche giovane padre che porta il bambino piccolo, ma nei villaggi portare i bambini piccoli è un compito esclusivamente femminile. Nei villaggi per un maschio portare un bambino piccolo significa sollevare domande sul suo essere un vero maschio. Le immagini di oggi sono dagli stati di Nagaland, Assam e Meghalaya nel nord-est e presentano una mamma, una nonna e una sorella che portano un bambino piccolo.

Parents & kids - Genitori e figli - माँ पिता और बच्चे

Today's images have ducks with their babies from different lakes in Italy. Whenever I see ducks with baby ducks, I remember the childhood tale of the ugly duckling who worries about not being as beautiful as her mother. That story is written from the child's point of view. I think that for parents it is so important to help our children gain self-confidence but sometimes it may not be easy. Till our children are not successful in their lives, we keep on worrying. And often, our ideas of success do not match with their ideas.

आज की तस्वीरों में इटली की विभिन्न झीलों से बच्चों के साथ बतखें हैं. जब भी बच्चों के साथ बतखों को देखता हूँ, बचपन की पढ़ी हँस के बच्चे की कहानी याद आती है जिसमे बच्चा सोचता है कि वह भद्दा है, माँ जैसा सुन्दर नहीं है. यह कहानी बच्चे की दृष्टि से लिखी गयी है. सोचता हूँ कि माता पिता के लिए अपने बच्चों को आत्मविश्वास देना कितना आवश्यक है और कितना कठिन भी है. जब तक हमारे बच्चे अपने जीवन में सफल नहीं होते, हमें चिन्ता बनी रहती है. पर उनकी सफलता का क्या मापदँड होना चाहिये, इसमें अक्सर हमारे विचार मेल नहीं खाते.

Quando vedo le papere con i figli, penso sempre al racconto del brutto anatroccolo che si preoccupa di non essere bello come sua madre. Penso quanto sia importante per noi genitori di aiutare i nostri figli ad avere fiducia in se stessi, e anche quanto difficile ciò può essere. Fino a quando i nostri figli non raggiungono successo nella loro vita, continuiamo a preoccuparci. E spesso le nostre idee di cosa significa avere successo non coincidono con le loro idee.

Nehru & kids - Nehru e bimbi - नेहरु और बच्चे

Guwahati, Assam, India: India's first prime minister Pandit Nehru's name is associated with children. Partly it was due to ideals of the India's struggle for independence, partly because those were innocent times, and thus Nehru had that kind of image. In 1962 when he had come to our school, among those welcoming him, I was also there. Today no politician can get that kind of importance among children. I liked these grey terracotta stautes in the Nehru park.

गुवाहाटी, असम, भारतः भारत के पहले प्रधानमंत्री पंडित नेहरु का नाम बच्चों के साथ जुड़ा है. सन् 1950-60 में कुछ स्वतंत्रता संघर्ष के आदर्शों का प्रभाव था, कुछ वह समय ही मासूम था, जिससे नेहरु जी की इस तरह की छवि बन गयी थी. जब 1962 में वह हमारे स्कूल में आये थे तो उनका स्वागत करने वालों में मैं भी था. आज के समय के बच्चे किसी राजनीतिज्ञ को इतना महत्व नहीं देते. यहाँ के नेहरु पार्क में भूरे रंग की यह टेराकोट्टा की मूर्तियाँ मुझे बहुत अच्छी लगीं.

In parte per gli ideali della lotta per l'indipendenza e in parte perché erano tempo più innocenti, Nehru era riuscito a costruire questa immagine. Nel 1962 quando lui era venuto alla mia scuola, ero tra quelli che gli avevano dato il benvenuto. I bambini di oggi non danno tanta importanza a nessun politico. Al Parco Nehru della città, mi sono piaciute queste statue grigie di terracotta.

Rural lives - Vite rurali - ग्रामीण जीवन

Sonapur, Assam, India: That day I was also in an Assamese village. Everything was beautiful and peaceful. Working in the fields, taking bath in the ponds, carrying their children, fishing, ordinary lives of ordinary people. Some hundred km away, in other villages, some people were shooting and other people were dying. They must have been persons like these!

सोनापुर, असम, भारतः उस दिन मैं भी असम के एक गाँव में था. सब कुछ सुन्दर व शान्त था. खेतों में काम करते, पुखरिया में नहाते, बच्चों को उठाये, मछली पकड़ते लोग, सामान्य लोगों के सामान्य जीवन. वहीं से कुछ सौ किलोमीटर दूर, अन्य गाँवों में कुछ लोग गोली चला रहे थे, कुछ मर रहे थे. ऐसे ही लोग थे शायद वह भी!

Sonapur, Assam, India: Quel giorno anch'io ero in un villaggio del Assam. Tutto era bello e tranquillo. Lavoravano nei campi, facevano bagni nel laghetto, portavano i figli, pescavano, vite ordinarie delle persone ordinarie. In altri villaggi, qualche centinaia di km lontani, altre persone sparavano e altre morivano. Anche quelle dovevano essere persone come queste!

स्कियो, इटलीः चिड़ियाँ पानी में खेल रहीं हैं, बच्चे मुग्ध हो कर उन्हें देख रहे हैं, लेकिन एक छोटी सी बच्ची गोद में किताब ले कर बैठी है और अपनी ही दुनिया में खोयी है. यह शिल्पकला मुझे बहुत अच्छी लगी, इसे बनाने वाले कलाकार हैं इटली के अल्फोंसो फोरतूना.

Childhood streets - Viuzze dell'infanzia - बचपन की गलियाँ

Gaza, Palestine: The old city is a few kilometres inland, away from the sea coast. When I saw the children playing in its streets, I remembered my childhood days in the similar streets of old Delhi.

गाज़ा, फिलिस्तीनः पुराना शहर सागरतट से दूर, कुछ किलोमीटर अन्दर की ओर है. वहाँ की गलियों में खेलते बच्चों को देखा तो मुझे ऐसी ही पुरानी दिल्ली की गलियों में अपना बचपन याद आ गया.

Gaza, Palestina: La vecchia città è situata alcuni chilometri dentro l'entroterra, lontana dalla costa. Quando ho visto i bimbi giocare nelle sue stradine, ho ricordato la mia infanzia in simili stradine di vecchia Delhi.
