Thinking of Darwin's theory of evolution, I wonder if Hindu God Hanuman can be a symbol of that pre-historical period, hundred thousand years ago, when different species of Homo Sapiens were developing, such as the Neanderthal man?

India: Midnapur district of West Bengal has a tradition of Patua artists who paint folk tales and then during marriages and festivals, travel in the villages with their paintings to sing those tales. Like other folk arts, even Patua artists need to grapple with poverty and the changing social context. Today's images have the paintings of artist Ms. Manimala Patua about the seven children of the first couple Pilchu Haram and Pilchu Burhi, who started the human race. This painting is exhibited in Manas Museum of Bhopal.

Bangalore, India: Each festival is linked to a story in which, gods, demons, rivers, mountains, nature, people, everyone takes part. Today with the greetings for holi, the festival of colours, the images tell such a story. (This dance is called Veeragase - thanks to Meghana for this information)

Deity's journey - Viaggio delle divinità -

Chinese Buddhist deities, Bangkok, Thailand - images by Sunil Deepak, 2009

Bangkok, Thailand: When I saw these statues in a Buddhist temple, I thought about the journeys of cultures accross countries and the way they change. First Buddhism must have spread from north India and Nepal towards Thailand, China and countries of East Asia. Then with time, the Chinese Buddhist traditions influenced the countries of East Asia. Thus, Buddhism in each Asian country shows Indian, Chinese and local influences. Now in India, often you can buy Hindu deities made in China - perhaps with time, India's Hinduism will have Chinese influence?

Ha'Noi, Vietnam: Offerings of paper animals - dragon, horse and elephant, in a temple. When I saw them, I had asked myself, won't God know that these are not real but only paper animals? Or may be God does not care about the offerings and cares only about the feelings in the hearts of the faithful and the offerings are for the mental satisfaction of those who offer them? Then I thought that such costumes had given opportunities of survival to the art and the artists in the local communities.

Delhi, India: I like reading Jared Diamond. In a new TED video he says that societies based in big cities tend to be very similar, while each tribal community is different from the other, and that tribal communities are experiments in ways of living. Today's images have sculptures of tribal persons from Delhi's Cottage Industry Emporium.
