Guwahati, Assam, India: For Chhath festival, after praying to the rising sun on the banks of a river, married women put a line of vermilion on their forehead. Today's images have three couples after their Chhath prayers at Brahmaputra river.

Archimedes' bath - Bagno di Archimede - आर्कीमिडीज़ का स्नान

Manchester, UK: A contemporary of emperor Ashoka in India, the Greek scientist Archimedes had discovered the way of measuring the volume of irregular-shaped objects by dipping them in water. There is a story that the idea came to him while he was in the bath tub. Thrilled by his discovery, he rose up from the tub and ran shouting "Eureka, Eureka" (I have found it), forgetting that he was nude. Today's images have a statue depicting that Eureka moment of Archimedes. Its sculptor is Thompson W. Dagnall.

मेनचेस्टर, ब्रिटेनः भारत के सम्राट अशोक के समकालीन यवनी वैज्ञानिक आर्कीमीडीज़ ने टेढ़े मेढ़े आकार की वस्तुओं के परिमाण को पानी में डुबो कर मापने का तरीका खोजा था. कहते हैं कि यह सिद्धांत उनके मन में तब आया जब वह एक टब में लेटे स्नान कर रहे थे. उस समय वह उल्लास से टब से उठ कर "यूरेका, यूरेका" (मिल गया) कहते हुए भागे, भूल गये कि वह निर्वस्त्र थे. आज की तस्वीरों की मूर्ति में उनके इसी यूरेका वाले क्षण को दिखाया गया है. मूर्ति के शिल्पकार है थोमप्सन डगनाल.

Si dice che l'idea gli era arrivato mentre facevo bagno nella vasca. Felice della sua idea, si era alzato gridando "Eureka, Eureka" (l'ho trovato) e si era messo a correre, dimenticando che era nudo. Lausanne, Switzerland: Sculpture of the "Nude giant" by French artist Rembrandt Bugatti at the International Olympic museum. The original sculpture was from 1907, and I thought that statue's face looked very similar to the American actor and politician Arnold Schwarzenegger.

Losanna, Svizzera: La scultura "Il gigante nudo" del artista francese Rembrandt Bugatti al museo internazionale olimpico. La scultura originale era del 1907 e mi sembrava di scorgere la faccia del attore e politico americano Arnold Schwarzenegger nei tratti della statua.

Happy person - Persona felice - खुशमिज़ाज

Guwahati, Assam, India: That young man was part of the Dev Puja folk dance from Karnataka in the India Youth Festival. His role was not important, he just had to stand on one side of the stage with a temple prayer-column. His face expressed joy. Standing at his place, he moved in rhythm with the main dancers on the stage. To find happiness in whatever we get from life, is that something that we are born with or it is something that we choose to be?

गुवाहाटी, असम, भारतः वह नवयुवक भारतीय युवा फेस्टिवल में लोकनृत्यों के कार्यक्रम में  कर्णाटक के देवपूजा नृत्य में था. कुछ विषेश नहीं करना था उसे, बस स्टेज के एक ओर हाथ में मन्दिर के पूजा स्तम्भ ले कर खड़ा होना था. उसके चेहरे से खुशी झलक रही थी. स्टेज पर नाचते मुख्य नर्तकों के साथ साथ वह अपनी जगह पर खड़ा झूम रहा था. जीवन में कुछ भी मिले, उसमें आनन्द खोज लेना, ऐसा स्वभाव हमें किस्मत से मिलता है या हम स्वयं यह चुनते हैं कि हमें कैसा होना है?

Guwahati, Assam, India: Al festival indiano dei giovani, lui era parte di un gruppo dal Karnataka che ballavano la danza Dev Puja. Suo ruolo non era importante, doveva solo stare da una parte sul palcoscenico con una colonna di preghiera del tempio. La sua faccia esprimeva felicità. Insieme ai danzatori principali, stando al suo posto il suo corpo si muoveva in ritmo. La capacità di trovare gioia in quello che riceviamo dalla vita è qualcosa con cui si nasce o siamo noi che la scegliamo?

Milan, Italy: The pavilion of South Tyrol region from the north-east of Italy at the Expo 2015 gives importance to the nature. For sitting they have bundles of dry hay with cushions. They also have different wooden sculptures, out of which 3 are presented above - The "Oh my God!" man, the photographer and the flag holder.

मिलान, इटलीः विश्व एक्स्पो 2015 में इटली के उत्तर पूर्वी क्षेत्र आल्तो आदिजे की पेविलियन में प्रकृति को महत्व दिया गया है. बैठने के लिए सूखे घासफूस के बँडल है जिनपर कुशन रखे हैं. वहाँ पर बहुत सी लकड़ी की मूर्तियाँ भी हैं जिनमें से तीन प्रस्तुत हैं - "हे भगवान!" वाला पुरुष, फोटोग्राफर तथा झँडे वाला युवक.

Assam, India: Many of the folk-dances of India show movements similar to those of the Yoga exercises. Today's images have a traditional dance by young men from Khetri in Assam, where they show off their body-strength and flexibility, while the inspiration from Yoga is clearly visible.

असम, भारतः भारत के बहुत से लोकनृत्यों में योगासनों से प्रेरित मुद्राएँ दिखती हैं. आज की तस्वीरों में असम के खेत्री क्षेत्र से नवयुवकों का पारम्परिक नृत्य जिसमें शरीर की शक्ति तथा लचीलापन दोनों का प्रदर्शन है, और योगासनों की प्रेरणा भी स्पष्ट है.

Majuli, Assam, India: In the traditional Bhaona theatre, in the scene of Sita's wedding, many kings come wishing to marry her. An actor playing the role of one of those kings gets ready for the scene while his moustaches are fixed.

माजुलि, असम, भारतः पाराम्परिक भाओना नाटक में सीता के स्वयंवर वाले दृष्य में बहुत से राजा सीता से विवाह करने की इच्छा ले कर आते हैं. उन्हीं में से एक राजा का भाग निभाने वाले अभिनेता की तैयारी के दौरान उनकी मूँछें लगायी जा रही हैं.

Story-tellers - Racconta storie - कथाकार

Majuli, Assam, India: The traditional theatre Bhaona presents the stories of Ram and Krishan written by 16th century social and religious reformer Srimanta Shankerdev. In this theatre all the roles are played by men. Theatre starts with Sattriya men who sing the story accompanied by the beats of their drums and this part is called "Gayan Bayan". Today's images have the Sattriya story tellers of Bhaona theatre.

माजुलि, असम, भारतः भाओना पाराम्परिक नाटकों में राम तथा कृष्ण की कहानियों का चित्रण होता है, जिन्हें सोलहवीं शताब्दी में असमिया धर्मसुधारक श्रीमन्त शंकरदेव ने लिखा था. इन नाटकों में केवल पुरुष अभिनेता होते हैं. नाटक का प्रारम्भ करते हैं सत्रिया युवक जो ढोलक की थाप के साथ कथा को गा कर सुनाते हैं, इस हिस्से को "गायन बायन" कहते हैं. आज की तस्वीरों में बाहोना नाटक के सत्रिया कथाकार हैं.

Bamboo sellers - Venditori di bambù - बाँस बेचनेवाले

Guwahati, Assam, India: I had seen the huts on the river Brahmaputra while passing from there in a bus and had thought that those were the houses of fishermen. When I went there I found that it was the place of bamboo sellers. Bamboos are brought there from the north through the river. Huts of the poor, traditional Assamese houses or concrete apartments, here bamboo is used in all kinds of construction.

गुवाहाटी, असम, भारतः वहाँ से गुज़रते समय बस से ब्रह्मपुत्र नदी के किनारे बनी झोपड़ियों को देख कर सोचा था कि अवश्य मछुआरों के घर होंगे. पास जा कर देखा तो मालूम चला कि वह बाँस बेचने वालों की बस्ती है. बाँस उत्तरी असम से नदी से लाये जाते हैं. गरीबों की झोपड़ियाँ हों, पाराम्परिक घर हों या आधुनिक काँक्रीट के एपार्टमैंट, यहाँ बाँस हर जगह काम आते हैं.

Guwahati, Assam, India: Avevo visto le capanne lungo il fiume Brahmaputra mentre passavo da quelle parti in autobus e avevo pensato che erano le case dei pescatori. Invece è la zona dei venditori di bambù. I bambù arrivano dal nord tramite il fiume. Che siano le capanne dei poveri, le case assamesi tradizionali o i moderni appartamenti di cimento, il bambù si usa per tutte le costruzioni da queste parti.

Yoga dance - Danza della Yoga - योग नृत्य

Yesterday the first international day of yoga was celebrated. Different traditional dances of India are also influenced by yoga. For example, the Goti-Pua dance from Odisha. It is danced by young boys dressed as girls. Bandha Nritya of Goti-Pua presents different positions of yoga. Today's images are of this dance.

कल पहला अंतर्राष्ट्रीय योग दिवस मनाया गया. भारत में विभिन्न पाराम्परिक नृत्यों पर भी योगासनों का प्रभाव है, जैसे कि ओडिशा का गोटी-पूआ नृत्य. लड़कियों का भेष बनाये छोटी उम्र के लड़कों के द्वारा किये जाने वाले गोटी-पूआ के बाँध नृत्य में भिन्न योगासनों को दिखाते हैं. आज की तस्वीरों में उसी के कुछ चित्र हैं.

Ieri è stata celebrata la prima giornata internazionale della yoga. In India diverse danze tradizionali sono influenzate da yoga. Per esempio, la danza Goti-Pua dallo stato di Odisha. I danzatori sono giovani ragazzi vestiti da ragazze. Nella forma Bandha Nritya di Goti-Pua si presentano le diverse posizioni della yoga. Le immagini di oggi sono di questa danza.

Night markets - Mercati notturni - रात्री बाज़ार

Asia: I love selecting pictures from different countries on the same theme for this blog, because it is an opportunity to go through the pictures of old journeys and remember places and people. Today's images are from 3 countries of Asia - India (Jorhat), Thailand (Bangkok) and Vietnam (Hanoi). In all the three there are men selling something in the night market and they are all looking towards the camera. The man in Jorhat seemed worried, the one in Bangkok was happy while the third one in Hanoi did not like that I was clicking pictures of special lights.

एशियाः इस ब्लाग के लिए एक विषय पर विभिन्न देशों की तस्वीरें चुनना मुझे बहुत अच्छा लगता है, क्योंकि इससे पुरानी यात्राओं की तस्वीरें देखने और भूली बातों-लोगों को याद करने का मौका मिलता है. आज की तस्वीरें एशिया के तीन देशों से हैं, भारत (जोरहाट), थाईलैंड (बैन्काक) तथा वियतनाम (हानोई). तीनों तस्वीरों में रात के बाज़ार में सामान बेचने वाले पुरुष हैं और तीनों कैमरे की ओर देख रहे हैं. जोरहाट वाला पुरुष चिन्तित लग रहा था, बैन्काक वाला खुश था जबकि हानोई वाले को बुरा लगा था कि मैंने उसकी विषेश रोशनियों की फोटो खींची थी.

Asia: Amo scegliere le foto per questo blog, sullo stesso tema ma da diversi paesi. E' un'opportunità per ripassare le vecchie foto dei viaggi e ricordare posti e persone. Le immagini di oggi sono da 3 paesi dell'Asia - India (Jorhat), Thailandia (Bangkok) e Vietnam (Hanoi). In tutte le tre, vi sono uomini che vendono qualcosa in un mercato notturno e tutti e tre stanno guardando verso la macchina fotografica. L'uomo a Jorhat sembrava preoccupato, quello a Bangkok era felice mentre quello a Hanoi non aveva gradito che scattavo le foto delle sue luci particolari.
