Bologna, Italy: Yesterday I met a painter - Piero Gianfranceschi. He is an architect by profession and a painter for passion. He paints dreamland like pleasant worlds where colourful mango like shapes play an important role. You can see some examples of his art on his webpage. I love meeting such persons who are in some profession, but who build their parallel worlds for expressing their creativity, probably because I can see myself in them.

India: Midnapur district of West Bengal has a tradition of Patua artists who paint folk tales and then during marriages and festivals, travel in the villages with their paintings to sing those tales. Like other folk arts, even Patua artists need to grapple with poverty and the changing social context. Today's images have the paintings of artist Ms. Manimala Patua about the seven children of the first couple Pilchu Haram and Pilchu Burhi, who started the human race. This painting is exhibited in Manas Museum of Bhopal.

Thetis & Achilles by Thomas Banks - images by Sunil Deepak, 2010
Thetis & Achilles by Thomas Banks - images by Sunil Deepak, 2010
Thetis & Achilles by Donato Creti - images by Sunil Deepak, 2010

In a Greek myth a water nymph called Thetis dips her son Achilles in the sacred waters of river Styx so that no weapon can hurt his body. However, her son's heel that she was holding, remains untouched by the water and in the end, Achilles dies when an arrow hits that heel. Today's images tell this story in a sculpture and in a painting. The sculpture is by eighteenth century artist Thomas Banks from the V&A museum of London and the painting is by seventeenth century artist Donato Creti from the municipal art museum of Bologna, Italy.

Castelfranco Veneto, Italy: Who is chosen as the favourite son by a city and given the place of honour? Often this honour is given to politicians, freedom fighters, industrialists or scientists. However, sometimes authors, painters and artists can receive this honour. This tiny town has chosen Giorgione, a famous painter from fifteenth century as their icon.

Painted story - Racconto dipinto -

Stained glass windows, cathedral, Brussels, Belgium - images by Sunil Deepak, 2013
Stained glass windows, cathedral, Brussels, Belgium - images by Sunil Deepak, 2013
Stained glass windows, cathedral, Brussels, Belgium - images by Sunil Deepak, 2013

Brussels, Belgium: Church windows often have stories from bible or from local religious history. Usually they portray the main characters of the events from very close. Today's images have stained glass windows from the cathedral of Brussels, where I was a bit surprised by the window shown in the first image. It seems as there is no main character in this story. On right side there are two men talking, one holds a big key, and in the background you can see the small kneeling figure of a young man. When I saw it, I felt as if it was not an old painted scene, but rather a scene from a contemporary film.

Circles of life - Cerchi della vita -

Art by Andrea Benetti, Bologna, Italy - images by Sunil Deepak, 2013
Art by Andrea Benetti, Bologna, Italy - images by Sunil Deepak, 2013

Bologna, Italy: I like the abstract art of Andrea Benetti, and I have already presented some of his works. Today there are 3 more works by him that make me think of the cells and the microscopic bacteria from the biology classes. However, I believe that in abstract art, the significance of what you understand when you look at it, is one part of it. It's impact on your unconscious mind, that you can not articulate logically, is equally important.

Neo rockart - Arte Neorupestre -

Neo-rock art by Andrea Benetti, Bologna, Italy
Neo-rock art by Andrea Benetti, Bologna, Italy
Neo-rock art by Andrea Benetti, Bologna, Italy

Bologna, Italy: Rock paintings were first artistic expression of humankind, when prehistoric people had made their first paintings in the caves. Those shapes had a simple emotional and spiritual connection to nature. Somewhat similar ideas inspire the art of Italian artist Andrea Benetti, and he calles it Neo-rock art. His art seems to have simplicity of figures made by a child, while his shapes bring together natural and man-made worlds of today.

Frescoes - Affreschi -

Frescoes from Pepoli palace - S. Deepak, 2012
Frescoes from Pepoli palace - S. Deepak, 2012
Frescoes from Pepoli palace - S. Deepak, 2012

Bologna, Italy: Pepoli Palace built in 1653 hosts an art museum, but the frescoes on its walls and roofs are more beautiful than the paintings of the museum. Today's images have parts of the roof from the hall of honour of this building. This hall is also known as "Hall of triumph of Hercules" because its frescoes tell the story of the Hercules, the hero from Greek Mythology. I think that the word "hero" came from "Hercules".

Green lights & cocconut trees, Salvador, Bahia, Brazil - S. Deepak, 2010

Salvador, Brazil: There were green lights under the coconut trees on the beach. Pictures of those trees and lights taken from the window of a moving car are like abstract paintings that I like very much.

Bologna, Italy: The artist of today's images is Filippo Minelli, who started his art-journey as a graffitti artist on the walls. These images are from his exhibition "Contrasts between messages, signs and materials".
