Fog - Nebbia - धुँध

प्रशाँत पाँडे की कविता "एहसास" का प्रारम्भ था, "इस धुँध की महक कितनी सोंधी होती है ना .." और कविता का अंत था, "वो सोंधी सी महक अब भी वहीं लेटी है, और वो कोहरा मेरे बिस्तर में रात भर पैर समेटे सोता रहता है." सर्द रात को बिस्तर में साथ सोये कोहरे को तो मैंने भी बहुत बार देखा है पर धुँध की सोंधी महक मुझे क्यों नहीं सुँघाई देती? सर्दी से ठिठरते नँगे पेड़, आसपास गिरे सूखे पीले पत्ते, धुँध में जाना पहचाना भी अनजाना सा लगता है और धुँध में उदास यादों की महक आती है.

I had read a Hindi poem by Prashant Pandey that talked about fresh perfume of fog and it ended in, "That fresh perfume is still lying there, and that fog is sleeping in my bed with its feet tucked in." I have also seen cold fog sleeping in my bed in a cold night but I can't feel the fresh perfume of fog. Trees shivering with cold, naked branches, fallen yellow leaves, everything familiar seems unfamiliar in the fog and I can smell old, sad memories.

Avevo letto una poesia in Hindi di Prashant Pandey che parlava del profumo fresco della nebbia. La poesia finiva con le seguenti parole, "Quel profumo è sdraiato sempre lì, e quella nebbia dorme nel mio letto con i piedi tenuti stretti." Ho visto molte volte la nebbia che dorme nel mio letto in una notte fredda, ma non riesco a sentire il profumo fresco della nebbia. Alberi con i brividi per il freddo, i rami spogli, le foglie gialle per terra, tutto quello che è familiare sembra diverso, e nella nebbia sento l'odore delle vecchie memorie tristi.

City of cats - Città dei gatti - बिल्लियों का शहर

बैंकाक, थाईलैंडः आप से पूछा जाये कि दुनिया में कौन सा शहर है जहाँ सबसे अधिक बिल्लयाँ होती हैं तो आप क्या उत्तर देंगे? बचपन में पढ़ी "जूतों वाली बिल्ली" जैसी किताबों में लिखा होता था कि इटली में वेनिस शहर को बिल्लियों का शहर कहते थे. पंद्रह बीस पहले तक सचमुच वेनिस में बहुत बिल्लियाँ दिखती थीं, लेकिन आजकल बहुत कम हो गयीं हैं. जबकि मुझे लगा कि सचमुच का बिल्लियों का शहर तो बैंकाक है जहाँ बुद्ध मंदिरों में बहुत बिल्लियाँ दिखती हैं.

Bangkok, Thailand: If someone asks you, what city has largest number of cats, what would you answer? In childhood, books like "Cat with the boots" used to say that Venice was the city of cats. I think that upto 15-20 years ago, effectively in Venice I used to see lot of cats, but not nowadays. While in Bangkok, I thought that it is the city of cats, Buddhist temples seem to be full of them.

Bangkok, Tailandia: Se quanlcuno vi domandasse, qual'è la città dei gatti, quale sarà la vostra risposta? Da bambino avevo letto libri come "Gatto con gli stivali" che parlavano di Venezia coma la città dei gatti. Effettivamente, una volta si vedevano molti gatti a Venezia, ma ultimamente non mi sembra di aver visto dei gatti la. Invece è Bangkok dove ho visto tantissimi gatti, i templi buddisti ne erano pieni.

Broken leg - Gamba rotta - टूटी टाँग

जेनेवा, स्विटज़रलैंडः संयुक्त राष्ट्र संघ के भवन के सामने यह टूटी टाँग वाली कुर्सी उन सभी माईन यानि बमों की याद दिलाने के लिए है जिन्हें युद्ध के दौरान ज़मीन में गाड़ दिया जाता है और जिनकी वजह से युद्ध के समाप्त होने के कई वर्षों तक बच्चे, बड़े, बूढ़े अपने टाँगे और जान खोते रहते हैं. कई बार बम से कटे पैर और टाँग देखने के बाद इस कुर्सी की कटी टाँग दिल में शूल की तरह चुभती है पर इसके बावजूद कई देश हैं जो अब भी इन बमों को बना कर बेचते हैं. भावुक नहीं होना चाहिये, वे कहते हैं, हम नहीं बनायेंगे तो कोई अन्य बनायेगा, जब तक हथियारों में पैसा है, कोई न कोई इन्हें अवश्य बनायेगा.

Geneva, Switzerland: This broken chair in front of the UN building is for reminding people about anti-personal mines that are bruied under the ground during the wars and that continue to kill and maim children and adults for years after the wars are over. I have seen persons with their legs blown off due to mines and the sight of this chair in Geneva, every time that I see it, is a stark reminder of that horror. Yet there are countries that continue to make and sell these. We should not be emotional, they say, it is just a business, if we don't do it, someone else will.

Genevra, Svizzera: Questa sedia con la gamba rotta, davanti all'edificio dell'ONU, è per ricordare le persone rese disabili e uccise dalle mine anti uomo, che continuano a mietere vittime anni dopo la fine delle guerre. Ho visto persone con le loro gambe spazzate via dalle bombe e ogni volta che vedo questo sedia, quelli ricordi tornano come un pugno nello stomaco. Ma vi sono dei paesi che continuano a fabbricare e vendere queste bombe. Non dobbiamo essere emotivi, dicono, se non li venderemo noi, lo farà qualcun altro.

Whose statues? - Statue di chi? किसकी मूर्ती ?

उलान बातोर, मँगोलियाः आधुनिकता के साथ, भगवानों, संतों की मूर्तियों की जगह पहले नेताओं ने ले ली. मँगोलिया में रूसी प्रभाव बहुत था, इसलिए स्थानीय नेताओं के साथ साथ लेनिन, स्टालिन की मूर्तियाँ भी बहुत लगीं. पर अब समय बदल रहा है और नेताओं के बदले में नयी मूर्तियों में आधुनिक कलाकारों की शिल्पकला को दिखाया जाता है.

Ulaan Baator, Mongolia: With modernisation, the place of statues of gods and saints, was taken over by politicians and leaders. In Mongolia, the Soviet influence was strong, so along with local leaders, they also had statues of Lenin and Stalin. But now times are changing again and in the place of politicians, they prefer putting sculptures of modern artists.

Ulaan Baator, Mongolia: Con la modernità, le statue dei Dei e dei santi furono sostituite da statue dei politici e degli altri personaggi famosi. In Mongolia, la presenza sovietica era forte, per cui, oltre ai leader locali, avevano le statue di Lennin e Stalin. Oggi i tempi stanno cambiando di nuovo. Preferiscono mettere su sculture degli artisti famosi.

Women - Donne - औरतें

छाईमल्ले, नेपालः आज की तस्वीरों में अपने विकास की चेष्टा में रत, परस्पर सहायता के लिए बने एक महिला गुट की सदस्य हैं. दो साल पहले की यह यात्रा, पहाड़ों में पैदल चढ़ने उतरने की वजह से थोड़ी सी थकावट वाली थी, पर उसमें गाँवों में रहने वाली निम्न जाति कही जाने वाली बहुत सी महिलाओं को देखने जानने का मौका मिला था, जो आज भी नहीं बुला पाया हूँ. इन तस्वीरों को देखूँ तो बहुत से चेहरों से जुड़े संघर्ष की कहानियाँ याद आ जाती हैं.

Chaimalle, Nepal: Today's pictures show members of a women's self-help group who are struggling to find ways for their own betterment. This journey, two years ago, was very tiring because of climbing up and down the mountains, but it was also an unforgettable opportunity to meet and know so many of the women belonging to "lower castes". Looking at these pictures, I can remember some of the stories of their struggle.

Chaimalle, Nepal: Le foto di oggi presentano le associate di un gruppo di aiuto reciproco che cercano vie per il miglioramento della propria condizione. Questo viaggio di 2 anni fa era un po' stancante perché bisognava salire e scendere dalle montagne, ma era anche un'opportunità indimenticabile per conoscere queste donne che appartenevano alle cosi dette "caste basse". Ogni volta che guardo queste foto, penso ad alcune delle loro storie di fatica e di lotta, che avevano raccontato.

Festival - Festa - त्यौहार

बोलोनिया, इटलीः क्रिसमस आ रहा है एक महीना पहले से ही इसकी धूम शुरु हो गयी है. रँग बिरंगी झाँकियाँ बनायी हैं जैसे दिल्ली में कृष्ण जन्माष्टमी पर दिखती हैं. सड़कों पर और दूकानों पर, रोशनी की जगमगाती दीपमालाँए, हर ओर भीड़ कि किसके लिए क्या खरीदा जाये. बच्चे मचलते हैं कि यह वाला खिलौना चाहिये, वह नहीं चाहिये, मेरे दोस्त को यह दिया है और मेरी सहेली को वह मिलने वाला है. एक ही तो बच्चा होता है अधिकतर परिवारों में, तो उसको जितना दे दो उतना ही कम है. कितने परिवारों में तो वह एक भी नहीं होता, तो उन्हें अपने कुत्ते बिल्लियों की चिंता होती है. चाहे वह दिवाली हो या ईद या क्रिसमस, हर जगह वही सिरदर्दी खरीदारी की!

Bologna, Italy: Christmas is coming and the preparations have already started. Colourfull floats are there like in Delhi you see for Krishna Janamashtami festival. Roads and shops are lined with twinkling lights. Every where there are crowds, looking around for gifts to buy. It does not matter what festival is it, Diwali, or Idd or Christmas, every where all festivals are similar, full of shopping nightmares.

Bologna, Italia: Natale sta per arrivare ed i preparativi sono già inziati. Presepi colorati mi fanno pensare alla festa di Krishna Janamashtami a Delhi. Le luci colorate dappertutto e le folle in cerca dei regali da comprare. Non importa quale festa è, diwali o idd o natale, non importa quale paese è, sembra sempre lo stesso, un incubo di shopping e di acquisti!

For surviving - Per sopravvivere - जीने का सवाल

बोलोनिया, इटलीः बचपन में एक खेल खेलते थे, किसी को स्टेच्यू बोल दो तो उसे मूर्ती के समान स्थिर खड़ा होना पड़ता था और फ़िर जब तक उसे स्टेच्यू बोलने वाला मुक्ती न देता तब उसे यूँ ही रहना पड़ता. इसी खेल की याद आयी जब शाम को हम लोग क्रिसमस की खरीदारी करने को निकले थे तो सड़क पर मूर्ती बन कर खड़े युवक को देख कर रुक गये. क्रिसमस की खरीदारी, कि किसको क्या भेंट दी जाये, कई सप्ताह पहले से ही शुरु हो जाती है. हालाँकि सब लोग इस साल मंदी का रोना रहे हैं पर बाज़ार में भीड़ कम नहीं थी. सर्दी में लोग अपने मोटे कोटों में कँपकँपाते हुए जा रहे थे पर मूर्ती बने युवक ने बस एक स्वेटर पहना था और सर्दी ने बिना हिले खड़े रहना आसान नहीं होगा, शायद इसीलिए थोड़ी थोड़ी देर में वह अपनी मुद्रा बदल लेता था.

Bologna, Italy: As children we used to play a game called "statue", when you called someone statue that person had to stay still like a statue till he/she was released. Yesterday when we went out for our christmas shopping, I was reminded of this game when we stopped to look at a man playing a living statue. Even if people are talking about crisis but in the market it was crowded and people were huddled in thick jackets and overcoats. But the statue-man didn't have any coat and probably to escape the biting cold, after a few minutes he changed position.

Bologna, Italia: Da bambini giocavamo "statua", e quando chiamavi un compagno di gioco "statua", lui/lei doveva fermarsi come una statua finché veniva liberato. Ieri sera quando siamo andati in centro ho visto l'uomo statua e ho pensato a questo gioco. Anche se si parla tanto di crisi, le strade erano affollate come sempre. Le persone portavano giacche e cappotti per ripararsi dal freddo, tranne l'uomo statua che era esposto al freddo e per non congelare, ogni tanto cambiava la sua posizione.

Childhood - Infanzia - बचपन

औखलडुंगा, नेपालः फ़िल्मों में गाना गाते और नाच करते गाँववासियों से सचमुच का गाँव कितना दूर होता है. ऊँचे पहाड़ों की सुदंरता में कमरतोड़ मेहनत करते किसान और उनके मिट्टी में खेलते बच्चे जिनका बचपन छोटी उम्र से ही अपने से छोटे भाई बहनों की देखभाल में लग जाता है. आश्चर्य इस बात से होता है कि इस सब के बाद भी बचपन उसी मिट्टी धूल झँझाल में भी खेलकूद और खुशी के साधन खोज लेता है.

Okhaldhunga, Nepal: The real villages are so far away from the fantasies of singing and dancing villagers in the Bollywood films. Surrounded by beautiful mountains, farmers do backbreaking work in the fields while their children play in the dirt and need to look after their younger siblings. What surprises me is that in spite of all the hardships, even in those dirt, dust and bushes, children find opportunities for playing and enjoying.

Okhaldhunga, Nepal: I villaggi reali sono così lontani dai contadini che cantano e ballano nel mondo del cinema di Bollywood. Circondati dalla bellezza delle alte montagne, i contadini fanno lavori sfaticanti, mentre i loro bambini giocano nella polvere e devono baradare ai fratellini più piccoli. Quello che mi sorprende è che anche in queste polvere e miseria, i bambini possono trovare opportunità per giocare e per divertirsi.

Nature's symbols - Simboli della natura - प्रकृति के चिन्ह

गार्दालैंड, इटलीः जितनी बार भी सूंसों यानि डोलफिनों को देख लो मन नहीं भरता कि इतने समझदार, खिलंदड़ जीव हो सकते हैं जिन्हें मछलियाँ पकड़ने वाले बड़े जहाज़ बेवजह लापरवाही से मार देते हैं. यह विचार भी आता है कि प्रकृति में जाने कितने अचरज भरे हैं पर मानव अपने अँधेपन से अपने थोड़े से समय के लाभ के सामने किसी को नहीं समझता और प्रकृति को नष्ट कर देता है.

Gardaland, Italy: It does not matter how many times I watch dolphins, every time they fill me with wonder that they are so intelligent and playful beings and I can't understand how fishing trawlers can kill them indiscriminately. Nature is full of wonders but human beings, looking for short term gains, do not seem to care and are destroying it.

Gardaland, Italia: Non importa quante volte guardo lo spettacolo dei delfini, ogni volta resto meravigliato da questi essere giocosi ed intelligenti, e non posso capire come le grosse navi pescherecci possono ammazzarli indiscriminatamente. La natura è piena di meraviglie, ma agli esseri umani che cercano profitti a breve, sembra che non interessi niente e la distruggono.

Black clouds - Nuvole nere - काले बदरा

छा गये बादल नील गगन पर, घुल गया कजरा शाम ढले ... आज की तस्वीरों में मँगोलिया से काले बादल. जाने क्यों मुझे सफ़ेद बादलों में भेड़, बकरियाँ, ऊँट, बच्चे, आदि दिखते हैं जबकि काले बादलों में गुस्सेवाले राक्षस दिखते हैं, शायद यह भी मन में गहरे बसे रंगभेद का असर है?

In today's pictures some black clouds from Mongolia. I don't know why I can see sheep, goats, camels, children and such things in the white clouds while in the black clouds I can mostly see angry demons? Perhaps it is part of the deeply ingrained discrimination against black colour?

Le foto di oggi presentano un po' di nuvole nere dalla Mongolia. Non so perché nelle nuvole bianche posso vedere agnelli, capre, cammelli, bambini ecc. mentre nelle nuvole nere vedo solo i demoni arrabbiati. Forse fa parte della discriminazione contro il colore nero che si insinua dentro nel profondo?

And the stars? E le stelle? तारे कहाँ?

चीन के दक्षिणी प्रदेश युनान की राजधानी कुन्मिंग पहुँचे तो चकित रह गया, यादों के छोटे से शहर की जगह गगनचुँबी इमारतों का जगमगाता आधुनिक शहर. अपने पुराने मित्र के साथ घूम रहा था जो अपने देश और अपने शहर के विकास पर बहुत गर्वशील था, तो मैंने कहा कि और तो सब अच्छा है पर इतनी रोशनी में अब वह पहले जैसे तारे नहीं दिखते. वह हँसने लगा, बोला, नहीं दिखते तो कोई बात नहीं रोशनी में रहना तारे देखने से ज़्यादा अच्छा है और तारों की बहुत याद आये तो बहुत गाँव हैं जहाँ रोशनी नहीं.

When we reached Kunming, the capital of Yunnan state in the south of China, I was amazed. In the place of a small town, it was a modern city of skyscrappers. I was walking with my old friend, who seemed very proud of the progress made by his city and his country. I said, it is great but now there is so much light that you can't see the stars. He started laughing and said, it does not matter. It is better to have light then to see the stars and if one really wants to see the stars, the villages are not far.

Quando siamo arrivati a Kunming, la capitale dello Yunnan nel sud della Cina, sono rimasto molto sorpreso dal cambiamento. Invece della piccola cittadina della mia memoria, al suo posto c'era una città moderna piena di grattacieli. Mentre camminavo con un vecchio amico dissi che era bella ma non si vedevano più le stelle. Lui si mise a ridere, e disse, che era meglio avere la luce piuttosto di vedere le stelle e in ogni caso, se uno doveva guardare le stelle, i villaggi non erano lontani.
