Death dance - Danza della morte - मरघट नृत्य

लंदन के ब्रिटिश म्यूजियम में जब डेमियन हिर्स्ट की कलाकृति, यानि रँग बिरंगे मानव कंकाल के कपाल तो उनसे घिन्न सी आयी थी, लगा था कि यह कला नहीं वहशीपन है. पर आज इस सप्ताह में मुंबई में हुए मृत्यु नृत्य के बारे में सोचूँ तो लगता है यह कला ही नरसंहार की भावना का चित्रण करती है.

In London's British museum, when I had seen Damien Hirst's "art" creation composed of colourful human skulls, I had thought that it was nauseous and repulsive. But if I think of the dance of death of the terrorists in Bombay in India, I feel that this art does express the feelings of brutal killings.

Nel museo British di Londra, quando avevo visto questa "arte" di Damien Hirst, avevo sentito nausea e repulsione. Ma se penso alla danza della morte innescata dai terroristi a Mumbai in India, penso che questa arte esprime bene il senso di massacro brutale.

Roman fountains - Fontane romane - रोम के फुव्वारे

रोम के बारे में कहते हैं कि इसके हर पत्थर पर इतिहास लिखा है, जितना भी घूम लो कभी पूरा नहीं होता. आज की तस्वीरों में रोम के कुछ प्रसिद्ध फुव्वारे. तीसरी तस्वीर में त्रेवी का फुव्वारा है जिसके लिए कहते हैं कि वहाँ सिक्का फैंको तो रोम दोबारा आने का मौका मिलेगा. शुरु शुरु में मैं जब भी रोम जाता, त्रेवी के इस फुव्वारे में सिक्का अवश्य फैंकता था!

About Rome it is said that history is written on every stone of the city, you can go around as much as you wish but you never finish discovering it. Today's pictures present some famous fountains from the eternal city. Third picture below is from Trevi's fountain, about which they say that if throw a coin in it, you will have an opportunity to come back to Rome. In the beginning whenever I used to go to Rome, I had a ritual of going to Trevi's fountain to throw a coin there.

Si dice che c'è storia in ogni pietra di Roma e che non finisci mai di scoprire questa città. Le foto di oggi presentano alcune fontane famose della città eterna. All'inizio ogni volta che passavo da Roma, avevo questo rito di andare alla fontana di Trevi per buttare una moneta dentro la fontana.

Goddess of justice - Dea della giustizia - न्याय की देवी

फ्लोरैंस, इटलीः न्याय की देवी की मूर्ती तो पहले कई बार देखी है, आँखों पर बंधी पट्टी और हाथ में तराजू. पर फ्लोरैंस में एक छोटी सी गली में एक अन्य न्याय की देवी की मूर्ती दिखी जो कुछ कुछ दुर्गा के जैसी है. उसकी आँखें खुली हैं, एक हाथ में तराजू और दूसरे में तलवार, यानि न्याय के साथ ही अगर दोषी पाये गये तो तुरंत सिर धड़ से अलग. या फ़िर शायद यह सोच गलत है और यह न्याय की देवी लड़ रही है कि कोई कैदी को छूने की कोशिश न करे, न्याय को अपना फैसला बिना किसी दबाव के किया जाने का मौका मिलना चाहिये? आप के विचार में इस मूर्ती का क्या अर्थ है?

Florence, Italy: I have seen statues of the goddess of justice many times, eyes covered with a scarf and a balance in one hand. In Florence I saw a different statue of the goddess of justice, that reminded me of Durga. Her eyes are open, she has a balance in one hand and a sword in the other. If you are guilty, you will get the punishment, she seems to say. Or perhaps it has another significance - the sword is for making sure that no one can touch the person under trial, and justice must be allowed to take its own course. What do you think is the meaning of this statue?

Firenze, Italia: Avevo visto diverse statue della dea della giustizia, con gli occhi bendati e una bilancia. Ma questa statua a Firenze sembrava diversa. Gli occhi aperti, una bilancia in una mano e una spada nell'altra, sembra una guerriera e mi fa pensare alla figura di Durga. Se sei colpevole, avrai la tua punizione subito, sembra dire. River of Florence - Fiume di Firenze - फ्लोरेंस की नदी

फ्लोरेंस, इटलीः जब सोंचू की दुनिया के कितने देशों में जा कर भी बस हवाईअड्डा और होटल के अलावा कुछ नहीं देखा तो दुख होता है. इसी लिए अब कहीं भी जाऊँ, शहर देखने के लिए कुछ समय अवश्य रखता हूँ, चाहे आधा घँटा ही सही. शनिवार को फ्लोरेंस में मीटिंग थी, तो समय से करीब एक घँटा पहले पहुँचा और स्टेशन के पास ही आर्नो नदी के पार शहर के पुराने हिस्से की गलियों में घूमा जहाँ पयर्टक नहीं जाते. आज की तस्वीरें इसी सैर से हैं.

Florence, Italy: If I think of all the countries where I have not seen anything except for the airport and the hotel, I feel a little sad. That's why now, when I go to any place, I keep some time to look at the city, even if it may be just half an hour. On Saturday I had a meeting in Florence and I went there one hour earlier, that was spent in the narrow streets of old part of the city accross the river Arno, that is usually ignored by tourists. Toda's pictures are from this morning walk.

Firenze, Italia: Se penso a tutti i paesi dove, a parte l'aeroporto e l'hotel, non ho visto niente, mi dispiace. E' per questo che ora quando vado in una città, cerco sempre di avere un po' di tempo per visitarla, anche se può essere soltanto mezz'ora. Mongolian music - Musica Mongola - मँगोली संगीत

मँगोलिया का पाराम्परिक संगीत, पाराम्परिक वाद्यों के साथ पुराने ज़माने में कैसा होता था यह तो नहीं मालूम पर आज कल उसे पश्चिमी सिम्फ़ोनिक संगीत की तरह बजाते हैं. कुछ कुछ वैसा ही लगा जब नयी फ़िल्म "युवराज" का संगीत सुना. शब्द, ताल, धुन भारतीय पर उसमें पश्चिमी सिम्फ़ोनिक संगीत मिला हुआ. आधुनिक पश्चिमी संगीत से प्रभावित गाने तो हिंदी फ़िल्मों में अनगिनत है पर शायद यह पहली बार है कि भारतीय लोकसंगीत, भारतीय शास्त्रीय संगीत और पश्चिमी सिम्फ़ोनिक संगीत को मिला का उनका फ्यूजन संगीत बनाया गया है? फ़िल्म के गानो में से "ज़िंदगी ज़िंदगी, क्या कमी रह गयी, आँख की कोर में क्यों नमी रह गयी" बहुत अच्छा लगा. खैर आज की तस्वीरों में मँगोली पाराम्परिक वाद्य हैं.

I don't know what kind of music they used to play in the past wiht Mongolian traditional music instruments, but today they use them to play something similar to western symphonic music. It was a some what similar feeling when I heard the music a new Hindi film called Yuvraaj - Indian folk and classical music has a touch of western symphonic music. Today's pictures are of the traditional Mongolian music.

Non so quale tipo di musica si suonava con gli strumenti musicali tradizionali in Mongolia in passato, ma oggi la loro musica sembra basata sulla musica simfonica occidentale. Ho avutno questa stessa sensazione quando ho sentito la musica del nuovo film di Bollywood, Yuvraaj, dove la musica folk e classica indiana ha un tocco della musica simfonica occidentale. Scientist artist - Scienziato artista - वैज्ञानिक कलाकार

बोलोनिया, इटलीः पिछले सप्ताह यहाँ विश्वविद्यालय के एक समारोह में भारत से सुप्रसिद्ध हिंदुस्तानी शास्त्रीय संगीत गायिका सुश्री अश्विनी भिडे देशमुख आयीं थीं. बायोकेमिस्ट्री में पीएचडी, जयपुर अतरौली घराने की गायक अश्विनी जी ने अपने मीठे सरल स्वभाव और सौम्य व्यक्तित्व से दिल जीत लिया. उनसे बात करते हुए मैंने उन्हें बताया कि मुझे उनका "गणपति विघ्नहरण" भजन बहुत अच्छा लगता है. रात को संगीत समारोह में अपने कार्यक्रम की समाप्ति पर यही भजन सुना कर भावविभोर कर दिया. आप चाहें तो यह भजन यूट्यूब पर भी सुन सकते हैं. अगर आप हिंदुस्तानी शास्त्रीय संगीत को नहीं पहचानते या उसका रस नहीं ले पाते तो एक बार यह भजन सुन कर देखिये.

Bologna, Italy: Last week in a cultural programme organised by the university, we had Ms. Ashwini Bhide Deshmukh, the well known hindustani classical music singer from India. A PhD in biochemistry and singer of Jaipur Atrauli gharana, she is a soft spoken and simple person. While talking to her, I had mentioned that I loved her singing of a particular prayer song to Ganesh. In the evening, at the end of her programme she sang that particular hymn. You can hear that song on Youtube. If you don't known Indian classical music or have difficulty in appreciating it, I suggest that you listen to this hymn once.

Bologna, Italia: Settimana scorsa nell'ambito della festa "Suoni dal Mondo" organizzato dal dipartimento di musica e arti drammatiche dell'università di Bologna, è venuta signora Ashwini Bhide Deshmukh dall'India. Con un dottorato in biochimica, Ashwini è anche una cantante della musica classica hindustani ed un esponente del stile conosciuto come "Jaipur-Atrauli gharana". E' una persona semplice a gentile. Mentre parlavo con lei, le avevo detto che mi piaceva una sua preghiera a Ganesh. Alla sera lei cantò quella preghiera con il mio immenso piacere. La potete ascoltare anche su Youtube. Se non conoscete la musica hindustani indiana, provate a sentire questa preghiera cantata da Ashwini.

Folk dancers - Danze etniche - लोकनर्तक

होटल में खाना खाने जाऊँ और वहाँ कोई गाना गा रहा हो या पियानो बजा रहा हो या कोई नृत्य चल रहा हो, तो मुझे लगता है कि कलाकारों की कला की उपेक्षा हो रही हो. लोग आप में बात कर रहे होते हैं, कोई ज़ोर ज़ोर से हँसता है, और कुछ लोग ही उस संगीत को सुनते हें या नृत्य को देखते हैं. आज की तस्वीरों में ऐसे ही कुछ लोकनर्तक हैं जो चीन के युनान प्रदेश की राजधानी कुनमिंग के एक रेस्टोरेंट में अपनी कला दिखाते हैं.

If I go to a restaurent for dinner and there is someone singing there or playing piano or some other instrument, I feel that it is a disrespect to the art, because people are busy talking or laughing and only a few persons actually listen to the music. Todays pictures have similar folk dancers from Kunming, capital of Yunnan province in south west of China, who perform while people are having their dinners.

Se andiamo a mangiare fuori e lì c'è qualcuno che canta o che suona piano, mi dispiace un po'. Penso che gli artisti e la loro arte sono ignorati dalla maggior parte delle persone, impegnate a chiacchierare e ridere. Soltanto pochi li ascoltano. Snow - Neve - बर्फ

स्वीटज़रलैंडः सफ़ेद बर्फ की रजाई ओढ़े सर्दी से ठिठुरते गाँवों की यह तस्वीरें दो तीन साल पहले हवाई जहाज से खींचीं थीं. इस साल तो लग रहा जैसे उस तरह की बर्फदार सर्दी आयेगी ही नहीं, नवम्बर समाप्त होने को आया और अभी तक बर्फ गिरना तो दूर की बात है, मोटे कोट तक पहनने की नौबत नहीं आयी.

Switzerland: These pictures of swiss villages huddling under a thick blanket of snow were taken a couple of years ago from the aeroplane. This year it seems that winter snow would never come. It is almost end of November and there is no sign of any snow, in fact it is not even cold enough for thick overcoats.

Svizzera: Queste foto dei campi sepolti sotto una spessa coperta di neve, le avevo scattato qualche anno fa dall'aeroplano. Quest anno sembra che non vi sarà neve. Siamo già vicino la fine di novembre e non fa ancora abbastanza freddo da dover indossare i cappotti.

मुझे लोगों से मिलना, बातें करना, उनकी कहानियाँ सुनना बहुत अच्छा लगता है, पर जीवन इतनी तेज़ी से बहता है कि रास्ते में दिखने वाले, मिलने वाले अधिकतर लोगों से रुक कर बात करने का समय नहीं मिलता. आज की तस्वीरों में चेहरे हैं, जिनमें शायद उदासी है, अकेलापन है, थकान है, अनसुनी कहानियाँ हैं.

I love meeting and talking to people, to listen to their stories. However, life flows so fast that there is not enough time to stop to talk to most of the persons one meets everyday. Today's pictures have faces, that show perhaps sadness, solitude, tiredness or may be unheard stories.

Mi piace molto incontrare persone e parlarle, ascoltare le loro storie. Ma spesso la vita scorre così veloce che non c'è abbastanza tempo per farmarsi a parlare con tutte le persone che incontriamo. Faith & suffering - Fede e sofferenza - आस्था और पीड़ा

बोलोनिया, इटलीः हर धर्म में पहाड़ी पर दुर्गम जगहों पर बने तीर्थ स्थानों का बहुत महत्व होता है, जिनका रास्ता आसान नहीं होता. मानव मन मानता है कि शरीर पीड़ा से ही प्रभु के द्वार मिलते हैं. अक्सर यह यात्रा किसी मन्नत माँगने या उसके पूरा होने पर की जाती है. हमारे शहर बोलोनिया में भी ऐसा ही एक गिरजाघर है जिसका नाम है सन लूका. पहाड़ी पर बने सन लूका की सीढ़ियाँ चढ़ते चढ़ते जब साँस नहीं ली जाती और हड्डियाँ दुखती हैं तो भगवान का नाम स्वयं ही मुख पर आ जाता है.

Bologna, Italy: Every religion gives importance to some religious centres built in difficult to reach places in the mountains and hills. We feel that to reach God we must face suffering. Often people do such journeys when they want to ask a favour to the God or they want to thank God for having their wish fulfilled. Bologna also has such a pilgrimage centre, it is the San Luca church on a hill near Bologna. When you can't breathe and your body aches, it is easy to think of God.

Bologna, Italia: Tutte le religioni danno importanza ai centri di preghiera situati in montagne e nei posti difficili da raggiungere. Pensiamo che soltanto tramite sofferenza troveremo il Dio. Qualche volta si va a visitare questi posti per chiedere un favore o per ringraziare. Anche Bologna ha un luogo così, la chiesa di San Luca, situato su una collina vicino alla città. Quando fai fatica a respirare e il tuo corpo fa male, è facile ricordare il Dio.

Mykonos sea - Mare di Mikonos - माईकोनोस का सागर

माईकोनोस, ग्रीसः शाहरुख खान और रानी मुखर्जी को "चलते चलते" में माईकोनोस में गाना गाते देखा था, बहुत अच्छा लगा था. जब एथेंस में सोच रहे थे कि कहाँ जाया जाये तो वही गाना याद आ गया था और हम लोग माईकोनोस द्वीप देखने चल पड़े थे. जाने अनजाने में जाने कितनी बातों में इस तरह हिंदी फ़िल्मों का प्रभाव हमारे ऊपर पड़ता है!

Myknos, Greece: I had seen Chalte Chalte, a Hindi film, in which well known Bollywood actors Shahrukh Khan & Rani Mukherjee were shown singing a song in Mykonos. In Greece, when we were deciding about places to visit, the decision to go to Mykonos was influenced by that song. In so many ways, films influence our decisions of daily life.

Mikonos, Grecia: Avevo visto gli attori di Bollywood, Shahrukh Khan e Rani Mukherjee in un film, dove loro cantavano una canzone a Mikonos. Quando eravamo in Grecia e dovevamo decidere dove andare, la decisione di visitare Mikonos fu influenzata da quella canzone. Penso che i film influiscono sulle decisioni della nostra vita quotidiana in maniera inconsapevole.

Morning of hope - Mattina della speranza - आशा की सुबह

कल सुबह टेलीविज़न पर अमरीका के नये राष्ट्रपति ओबामा का भाषण सुना तो आँखों में आँसू आ गये. मालूम है कि शुरु शुरु में सब नेता अच्छे लग सकते हैं और समय के साथ ही उनके सच्चे रँग दिखते हैं पर फ़िर भी यह सोच कर कि कीनिया के अफ्रीकी मुसलमान पिता का बेटा अगर अमरीका का राष्ट्रपति बन सकता है तो कुछ भी हो सकता है, सब दबे, शोषित, पीड़तों के लिए आशा है. आप कह सकते हैं कि यह बस भाषण देने की कला है ओबामा की जिसने मन को जीता है पर काश हमारे भारत में भी आज इस तरह की बात कहने वाले नेता होते! आज ओबामा के लिए कुछ जँगली फ़ूल, जिन्हें किसी ने क्यारी में बो कर प्यार से नहीं सींचा, जो अपने आप ही लड़ते मरते खिले हैं.

Yesterday morning, listening to the new president of USA, Obama, I cried. I know in the beginning all politicians look good and it is only with time that you see their true colours. But still the thought that the son of a Kenian muslim can become preident of USA, then every thing is possible and there is hope for all the oppressed and exploited persons. You can say that Obama has good oratorial skills but I wish some leader in India could have spoken in such a way! Today's pictures are for Obama, with wild flowers, no one has sown these flowers, they have grown up alone, fighting against all odds.

Ieri mattina ho pianto quando ho sentito parlare da Chicago, Obama, il nuovo presidente degli Stati Uniti. E' vero che all'inizio tutti politici sembrano belli e soltanto il tempo fa vedere i loro veri colori. In ogni caso il pensiero che figlio di un musulmano nero della Kenya può diventare il presidente d'America mi fa sentire la speranza che allora in questo mondo tutto è possibile, c'è speranza per le persone oppresse e emarginate. Potete dire che Obama sa soltanto parlare bene ma vorrei che qualche politico indiano (o italiano) sapesse dire queste cose come le ha dette lui! उलानगोम, मँगोलियाः रात को सपने में मुझे उड़ना बहुत अच्छा लगता है, एक पल में जहाँ जी चाहे पहुँच जाओ. कभी सोचता हूँ कि चील बन कर हवाओं पर तैरता, ऊपर आकाश से दुनिया देख पाता तो कैसा लगता? आज की तस्वीरों में वही अनुभूति है.

Ulaangom, Mongolia: I love the dreams where I am floating or flying and can go whereever I wish in a second. Sometimes I feel if I could fly like a kite, what kind of world I will see and what would I feel? Today's picture express that feeling.

Past's echo - Eco del passato - अतीत की प्रतिध्वनि

बोलोनिया, इटलीः कल दो नवंबर को यहाँ मृत लोगों को याद करने का दिन था, जिस दिन लोग अपने प्रियजनों की कब्रों पर फ़ूल ले कर जाते है. इस दिन कब्रिस्तान जाओ तो त्यौहार वाला मौसम दिखता है जब पुराने जान पहचान वाले, दूर दूर के रिश्तेदार मिल सकते हैं. आज कल बहुत से लोग दफ़न होने के बजाय बिजली के क्रेमाटोरियम में शरीर भस्म कराना चुनने लगें हैं इसलिए कब्रिस्तान के एक हिस्से में मृत लोगों के राख के कलश भी मिलते हें. बोलोनिया का चरतोज़ा नाम का कब्रिस्तान अपनी पुरानी मूर्तीकला वाली कब्रों के लिए पर्यटक स्थल भी है. आज की तस्वीरों में चरतोज़ा की कुछ मूर्तियाँ.

Bologna, Italy: Yesterday, 2 November was the day of remembering the dead and we visited the Certosa cemetry. The old part of the cemetry has thousands of beautiful statues and affrescos, a wonderful open air museum to go around and explore the past. Today some pictures from Certosa.

Grandmothers' songs - Canzoni delle nonne - दादियों के गीत

बोलोनिया, इटलीः देखने में सामान्य औरतें दिखतीं हैं और नाम है बिसट्रिश्की बाबी यानि "बिसट्रिश्की की दादियाँ", बल्गारिया की राजधानी सोफिया से करीब दस किलोमीटर दूर के गाँव बिसट्रिश्की से आयी हैं. जब गाना शुरु करती हैं तो इस तरह की आवाज़ निकालती हैं कि दिल धक धक करने लगे. उनके गाने सदियों से चली आने वाली परम्परा के गीत हैं, जिनके प्राचीन शब्दों के अर्थ वह स्वयं भी नहीं जानतीं. इन गीतों में कोमलता नहीं, चीत्कार और दहाड़ें हैं, स्वरों का अंतर्द्वँद है, विभिन्न सुरों कि लहरें हैं जैसे स्वर सागरों के संगम पर खड़े हों. बीच में अचानक लगा मानों यज्ञ के वैदिक मंत्र पढ़ रहीं हों.

Bologna, Italy: They look like ordinary women and are called Bistrishki Babi, that means "Grandmothers of Bistrishki" and they live in Bistrishki a village about 10 km from Sofia, the capital of Bulgaria. When they start singing, they bring out a sound that makes your heart palpitate. Their songs are traditions going back centuries and have antique words whose meanings even they themselves do not know. These are not tender songs, they have cries and roars, wars between notes, different notes rising up and down in waves as if you are standing in the centre of meeting place of oceans. In between I had the sensation of listening to mantras from vedic chants of fire-worship from Indian temples.

Bologna, Italia: Sembrano donne ordinarie e si chiamano Bistrishki Babi, le nonne di Bistrishki. Sono venute da Bistrishki, un villaggio a circa 10 km da Sofia, la capitale della Bulgaria. Quando iniziano a cantare, emettono un suono che fa palpitare il cuore.
