दिल्ली, भारतः परसों दीवाली थी पर यहाँ तो सामान्य काम का दिन था. ऊपर से सर्दी और बारिश. शाम को स्वीमिंग पूल गये, वापस आये तो खाने के साथ मिठाई खाई, खिड़की पर एक मोमबत्ती जलायी, यहाँ बोलोनिया में रहने वाले भारतीय परिवारों से टेलीफ़ोन पर बात की, कुछ ईमेल से आये दिवाली के ईकार्ड देखे और सोने का समय हो गया. यानि कि मजा नहीं आया. सोच रहा था कि किस बात की कमी रह गयी? अपने आत्मीय लोगों से दूर होने के अलावा, भीड़ भड़क्के, शोर शराबे, हँसी मजाक, इस सब की कमी लग रही थी. आज की तस्वीरों में दिल्ली की लाजपत नगर मार्किट की कुछ दुकानें.

Delhi, India: Day before yesterday was Deewali, but here it was a usual working day. It was cold and raining. In the evening we went to the swimming pool, had some sweets, lit a candle on the window and talked to friends on telephone. It was not much fun. Apart from the family, I was missing the hustle bustle, jostling crowds, noise, smells, laughter of Deewali. Todays pictures are from Lajpat Nagar market in Delhi.

Autumn - Autunno - पतझड़

बोलोनिया, इटलीः आज रात को सुबह तीन बजे घड़ी को पीछे करने का समय था. सारे यूरोप में आज समय एक घँटा पीछे करने से अपने प्राकृतिक स्थान पर आ गया. चूँकि गर्मियों में सुबह सूरज बहुत जल्दी निकलता है, तब घड़ी एक घँटा आगे कर दी जाती है ताकि लोग जब काम से शाम को घर लौटें तो उन्हें अपने परिवार के साथ दिन की रोशनी में कुछ समय बिताने को मिले. इसलिए गर्मियों के समय को "रोशनी बचाने वाला समय" कहा जाता है. इसका यह अर्थ भी है कि आज पतझड़ शुरु हो गया. सुबह बाग में पीले, भूरे, कत्थई होते हुए और ज़मीन पर गिरे पत्तों को देख कर लगा कि उनका असली पतझड़ तो बहुत पहले से ही शुरु हो चुका था, वे आज की सरकारी घोषणा के इंतज़ार में नहीं बैठे थे.

Bologna, Italy: Tonight the watches were put back by one hour in all of Europe. The sunlight saving summer time is over and autumn has officially arrived. In the park, there were all the autumn colours of yellow, red, & brown in the leaves of the trees and those fallen on the ground.

Nel parco i colori autnunnali, sfumature di giallo, marone, rosso, sono dappertutto nelle foglie sugli alberi e in quelle cadute per terra.

Wheels of time - Ruote del tempo - कालचक्र

इल्हा, मोज़ाम्बीकः उमस भरी सुबह की तेज धूप थी, हालाँकि समुद्र से थोड़ी सी हवा आ रही थी पर दिल किया कि वहीं पेड़ के नीचे बैठे लोगों के साथ बैठ जायें. पीछे किले की दीवार थी. किला द्वीप के कोने में इस तरह बना था मानों समुद्र के बीच में घुसी मुट्ठी हो, हर तरफ़ से समुद्र से घिरा, और धरती से छोटी सी कलाई से जुड़ा. समुद्र का चमकता नीला पानी, उस पर तैरती मछुआरों की नावें, पेड़ के नीचे बैठे लोगों की समय बिताने वाली सुस्त बातें. ज़ँज़ीरें से बँधे गुलाम बनाये जाने वाले लोग, जिनके लिए यह किला बना था, उनकी चीखों और कंद्रन को सुनने के लिए कल्पना चाहिये थी.

Ilha, Mozambique: It was a humid and hot morning, even if there was a bit of wind from the sea. I wanted to sit down under the tree where other persons were chatting. Behind was the wall of the fort. Fort had been built in a corner of the island like a fist pluning in the sea, surrounded by water on all sides and linked to the island by a narrow isthmus. The bright blue sea, the floating boats of the fishermen, men chatting lazily under the tree to pass time. To hear the cries and desperation of the men caught as slaves, for whom this fort had been built, you needed some imagination.

Ilha, Mozambico: Era una mattina calda e umida, anche se dal mare veniva una debole corrente d'aria. Volevo sedermi sotto l'albero dove gli uomini chiacchieravano. Dietro l'albero si vedevano le mura del forte. Era stato costruito in un angolo dell'isola come un pugno che si sprofonda nel mare, circondato dall'acqua da tutte le parti e collegato alla terra da una sottile striscia. Il mare di un azzurro intenso, le barche dei pescatori che galleggiavano e il pigro mormorio delle chiacchiere degli uomini sotto l'albero. Per sentire le grida e la disperazione degli uomini presi schiavi, per i quali questo forte era stato costruito, ci voleva un po' di fantasia.

Morning on the ocean - Alba sul mare - समुद्र पर सुबह

कोणार्क, उड़ीसा, भारतः आज की तस्वीरें कोणार्क के पास सागर तट पर एक ठँठी सुबह को खींची थीं. सुबह की धुँध में सागर का सलैटी रंग आसमान के रंग से मिल जाता है और क्षितिज नहीं दिखता. मुझे इन तस्वीरों में बेरंग उदासी भी दिखती है और नयी सुबह की आशा भी.

Konark, Orissa, India: I had taken these pictures on a cold morning at the sea shore near Konark. In the morning mist every thing seems grey and you can't see the horizon. To me these pictures seem sad because of lack of colours, and yet full of hope because of the morning light.

Purple makeup - Trucco viola - जामुनी श्रृंगार

बोलोनिया, इटलीः शनिवार रात को मित्रों के साथ पिछले साल के ग्रीष्म महोत्सव की तसवीरें देख रहे थे, जिसमें उन लोगों ने भी नृत्य किया था, तो लगा कि उनमें से कई तस्वीरें बहुत अलग सी थीं जिन्हें छायाचित्रकार पर विषेश जगह नहीं मिली. इसलिए आज प्रस्तुत हैं उनमें कुछ तस्वीरें, जामुनी रंग का श्रृंगार करता एक नर्तक दल.

Bologna, Italy: Last Saturday, we were watching pictures from last year's summer festival where they had also danced and I felt that some of those pictures were unusual in terms of colours and subjects and I hadn't shown many of them on this blog. So today's picture are from that festival showing a group of dancers getting their makeup in purple colour.

Gondola story - Storia delle Gondole - गोंदोले की कहानी

वेनिस, इटलीः वेनिस की बात हो तो वहाँ की काली लम्बी नावों को, जिन्हें स्थानीय लोग गोंदोला कहते है, सभी पहचानते हैं. यह नाव 11 मीटर लम्बी होती है और इसका भार करीब 600 किलोग्राम होता पर इसकी बनावट इस तरह की है कि एक व्यक्ति एक चप्पू से इसे आसानी से चला सकता है. यह नाव एक तरफ़ से थोड़ी लम्बी होती है और दूसरी ओर से ज़रा सी छोटी, इसलिए हल्की सी टेढ़ी हो कर चलती है. इसके आगे वाली "कँघी" में छह दाँत होते हैं जिन्हें वेनिस के छह हिस्सों का चिन्ह माना जाता है. इसे चलाने वाले केवल पुरुष होते हैं जो लाल-सफेद या नीली-सफेद धारियों वाली कमीज़ और उसी रंग के रिब्बन वाला हैट पहनते हैं. इसे प्रेमी युगलों की सवारी भी कहा जाता है.

Venice, Italy: Talking of Venice, everyone recognises their long black characteristic boats called gondolas. A gondola is 11 meters long and weighs around 600 kg but its construction is such that a single person can use it easily. The boat is slightly longer on one side so it floats with a slight tilt in the water. The front "comb" has six teeth, representing the six "sestieri" of Venice. Only men can navigate gondolas and typically they wear red-white or blue-white striped t-shirts and matching ribbons on their hats. Gondol is seen as the ideal boat for lovers.

Bad spirits - Spiriti maligni - भूत पिचाश

लंदन, ईंग्लैंडः भारतीय लोकथाओं और सामान्य जीवन में भूत, पिचाश, चुड़ैलों की किस्से कहानियाँ आम है. आज कल तो इस विषय पर टेलीविज़न में नियमित कार्यक्रम भी होते हैं. लंदन के ब्रिटिश म्यूजियम में यह लकड़ी की मूर्तियाँ भारत के ही निकोबार द्वीप से आयीं है और इनका प्रयोग भूत प्रेत उतारने के लिए किया जाता है.

London, UK: Indian folk stories and mythology have lot of stories about bad spirits that torment ordinary persons. Over past few years there have been regular TV programmes regarding such beliefs. These wooden statues of bad spirits from the Nicobar island off the eastern coast of India, that are used to exorcise the possession by bad spirits.

Londra, Gran Bretagna: I racconti degli spiriti maligni abbondano nei racconti folkloristici e mitologia indiana. Negli ultimi anni in India, vi sono stati diversi programmi televisivi su questo tema. Queste statue di legno nella museo British a Londra vengono dalle isole Nicobar nella baia di Bengala, e sono usate per exorcizzare gli spiriti maligni.

Old temple - Vecchio tempio - पुराना मंदिर

बैंकाक, थाईलैंडः महानक नहर के पास, रेलवे लाईन के पीछे छिपे बोरोमणिवात तक पहुँचना आसान नहीं, जहाँ बड़े भिक्षुकावास के साथ पुराना भूला भटका सा बुद्ध मंदिर है, जहाँ पर्यटक विरले ही दिखते हैं, केवल आसपास के रहने वाले लोग ही पूजा करने आते हैं. इसका पुराना नाम था "वात नोक" यानि शहर के बाहर वाला मंदिर, क्योंकि यह प्राचीन शहर की दीवार से बाहर था. किसी नये शहर को देखने जाऊँ तो मुझे इस तरह की जगहें जहाँ पर्यटक स्थल नहीं, बल्कि आम लोगों के रोज़मर्रा के जीवन का हिस्सा हों, वह बहुत अच्छी लगती हैं.

Bangkok, Thailand: Near Mahanak canal, behind the railway line, it is not easy to reach Borommaniwat temple, that has a huge monstery and an old forgotten Buddha temple. You hardly find any tourists there, it is mostly local persons who come there to pray. Its old name was "wat nok", meaning the temple outside the city walls. While visiting a city, I love to find places that not for tourists but are part of daily lives of ordinary people.

Bangkok, Tailandia: Vicino il canale Mahanak, dietro i binari delle ferrovie, non è facile arrivare fino al tempio di Borommaniwat, con un grande monastero e un vecchio tempio buddista. Il vecchio nome di questo tempio era "wat nok", o il tempio fuori dalle mura. Mentre visito una nuova città, amo cercare posti come questi, non frequentati dai turisti e invece parte della vita quotidiana della gente locale.

Morning in Beijing - Alba a Pecchino - बेजिंग की सुबह

बेजिंग, चीनः पिछले बीस वर्षों में बेजिंग इतना बदल गया है कि विश्वास नहीं होता. भीड़ भड़क्का, अंतहीन कारों की कतार, गगनचुंबी भवन, चौड़ी सड़कें, इस सब में मुझे पुराने बेंजिंग खोज के भी नहीं दिखता. पर सुबह के धुँधलके में जब लोग धीरे धीरे घर से निकलना शुरु करते हैं, तब भीड़ के बढ़ने से पहले के क्षणों में पुराने बेजिंग का आभास होता है. आज चीन की राजधानी बेजिंग में सुबह के धुँधलके के तीन दृश्य - चेयरमैन माओ के स्मारक के सामने, सैंट्रल रेलवे स्टेशन के सामने और एक बाग में.

Beijing, China: In the last 20 years, Beijing has changed so much that sometimes I can't believe that I am in the same city. Unending crowds, long rows of cars, buildings banging their heads against the sky, wide roads, it is difficult to see the traces of old Beijing. But early in the morning, when people start coming out of the houses, before it becomes a torrent in full swing, I can feel a trace of the old Beijing. Today's pictures are about morning in Beijing - near Mao's mausoleum, near the central railway station and in a park.

Pecchino, Cina: Negli ultimi 20 anni, Pecchino si è cambiata completamente. Folla senza fine di persone, file infinite di macchine, grattacieli, le strade larghe, è difficile vedere la traccia della vecchia città. Soltanto nelle nebbia della prima mattinata, prima che la folla si riversi sulle strade, mi sembra di scorgere uno scorcio della vecchia Pecchino. Le foto di oggi rappresentano questo momento fugace - vicino al mausoleo di Mao, davanti alla stazione centrale e in un parco.

Windows - Finestre - खिड़कियाँ

जेनोवा, इटलीः आप सोच सकते हैं कि खिड़कियों में कोई तस्वीर खींचने लायक बात क्या हो सकती है? यह सच है कि आधुनिक घरों में खिड़कियाँ अधिकतर बस एक चकोराकार खुली जगह ही होती हैं, रोशनी और हवा के लिए उनमें सुंदरता खोजना निरर्थक लग सकता है. पर पुराने वास्तुशास्त्र में झरौखों का अपना स्थान था और अगर आप ध्यान से देखेंगें तो आसपास विभिन्न आकार, रँगों और कला से सजी खिड़कियाँ दिखेंगी.

Genoa, Italy: You may ask what could be there in windows that you would want to take their pictures? It is true, in modern houses windows are just rectangular spaces, useful for light and air and all of them look the same. But older architecture searched for beauty in windows also and if look around at the old buildings, you would discover different forms and shapes, embellished with decorative elements.

Genova, Italia: Potresti chidere cosa possono avere le finestre per essere fotografate? E' vero, nelle case moderne le finestre sono sopratutto spazi rettangulari funzionali per l'aria e per la luce, e si somigliano tutte. Invece se guardate le case vecchie, troverete forme diverse con espressioni diversificate di arte, colori e disegni.

Boat ticket checker - Controllore della nave - नाव के कंडक्टर

बैंकाक, थाईलैंडः दिल्ली की बसों की भीड़ में कभी ऐसा नहीं लगा कि "बस कंडक्टर का काम करना कितना बढ़िया है" पर बैंकाक की नदी, नहरों पर चलने वाली नाव-बसों के कंडक्टर का काम मुझे अच्छा लगा. लगा नाव के बन्ने पर, पानी की सतह से थोड़ी दूर तेज़ चलती नाव पर इधर उधर घूमने में खतरा, तेज हवा, स्वतंत्रता और पानी की बूँदों का रोमांच है.

Bangkok, Thailand: In the Delhi buses, looking at the hassled ticket checkers in crowded narrow spaces, I would never thought of wishing to become one of them. However, in the river and canals of Bangkok, I liked the job of ticket checkers on the boat. Walking on the narrow boat parapets, almost skimming the water surface on speeding boat I thought there was a sense of danger, wind, freedom and droplets of water, a desirable mix.

Bangkok, Tailandia: Negli affolati autobus di Delhi non avevo mai desiderato di diventare un controllore, invece mi è piaciuto il lavoro di controllori sulle navi nel fiume e nei canali di Bangkok. Camminare sulle strette paittaforme, quasi toccando la superfice dell'acqua su una nave che si muove veloce, mi facevano pensare al pericolo, vento, libertà e gocce d'acqua, una miscela desiderabile.

South American masks - Maschere sud americane - दक्षिण अमरीकी मुखौटे

लंदन, ईंग्लैंडः ब्रिटिश संग्रहालय में दक्षिणी अमेरिका के प्राचीन मुखौटे और धार्मिक और सामाजिक विषेश रीति रिवाज के समय पहनी जानी वाली पाराम्परिक पौशाकें देख कर लगा कि रामलीला में हनुमान जी, वानर सैना और रावण की सैना को देखा हो.

London, UK: In the British museum, when I saw the south American antique masks and traditional dresses that were used for social and religious ceremonies, I was reminded of characters from Ramayan.

Londra, Gran Bretagna: Alla British museum quando ho visto le maschere e vestiti tradizionali sud americani, usati per le cerimonie sociali e religiose, mi sono ricordato alcuni caratteri del libro sacro indiano, il Ramayana.

Wood statues - Staue di legno - काठदेवता

दिल्ली, भारतः गणेश जी की मूर्ती खोजते खोजते दिल्ली हाट पहुँचा था जहाँ लकड़ी की बहुत सुंदर मूर्तियाँ दिखीं. ध्यान से देखिये तो मिलती जुलती हो कर भी हर मूर्ती का अपना भाव, अपनी विभिन्नता दिखती है, जो फैक्टरी की कतार में बनी मूर्तियों में नहीं मिल सकती. तभी बारिश हुई थी जिसका गीलापन इन मूर्तियों को इन तस्वीरों में एक अलग रूप देता है.

Delhi, India: Searching for a Ganesh statue, I had gone to Dilli Haat, where I saw these beautiful wooden statues. If you look carefully, even though similar, each statue has its own expression and diversity, that you can't find in rows of factory made statues. It had just rained that day and the wetness of the statues gives it a special look in the pictures.

Delhi, India: Cercavo una statua di Ganesh e così ero andato al mercato artigianale di Dilli Haat, dove ho visto queste bellissime statue. Se guardi con attenzione, anche se simili, ogni statua ha una sua espressione e la sua diversità. Quel giorno aveva piovuto e secondo me il legno bagnato da un look speciale a queste foto.

Taste memories - Memorie dei gusti - यादों के स्वाद

बैंकाक, थाईलैंडः बैंकाक के अधिकतर फ़ल और सब्जी बेचने वाले, भारतीय फ़ल सब्जी बेचने वाले जैसे ही दिखते हैं, यानि कुछ गरीब से, मेहनत करने वाले. सब्जियाँ भी करीब करीब एक जैसी हैं. घूमते समय जब भी कटहल या अनानास दिखते, मन में बचपन के स्वाद उभर आते, जब स्कूल की छुट्टियों में मौसी के पास पश्चिमी बँगाल जाते थे. इटली में घर वापस आया तो तुरंत बाज़ार से कटहल का डिब्बा ले आया, यहाँ ताजा कटहल नहीं मिलता, लेकिन अपने बनाये उस डिब्बेवाले कटहल में बचपन का स्वाद नहीं था!

Bangkok, Thailand: Majority of the fruit and vegetable sellers of Bangkok look like their Indian counterparts, poor and hard working. Even the things they sell are similar. While going around, I saw jack fruits and pineapples, that brought back childhood memories of summer holidays in West Bengal at my aunt's house. Back in Italy, I went to the Asian shop to buy a box of jack fruit as we don't get fresh jack fruit here. However, in my preparation, the taste of my memories was missing.

Bangkok, Tailandia: La maggior parte di fruttivendoli tailandesi somigliano ai fruttivendoli indiani, poveri e impegnati in una vita difficile. Anche i prodotti somigliano a quelli che si vendono in India. Mentre giravo ho visto jack fruit e ananas, e mi sono ricordato dei gusti dell'infanzia quando andavo da mia zia per per ferie estive. Tornato in Italia, dal negozio asiatico ho comprato una scatola di jackfruit per cucinarlo. Ma nella mia preparazione mancava il gusto della memoria.

Faith - Fede - आस्था

बोलोनिया, इटलीः हमारे घर के पास बना, सामान्य सा दिखने वाला गिरजाघर करीब एक हजार वर्ष पुराना है और यहाँ हर वर्ष 12 अक्टूबर को मरियम का त्यौहार मनाया जाता है जिसमें मरियम की मूर्ती गिरजाघर से निकल कर बाहर जलूस में निकलती है. गिरजाघर के पादरी डोन जूलियो वृद्ध हैं और साथ ही बहुत गप्पबाज. हर वर्ष वह इस स्थानीय त्यौहार के मौके पर घरों में जा कर लोगों को आशीर्वाद देते हैं. इस बार जब वह घर आये तो उनसे महात्मा बुद्ध और भगवद् गीता पर बात हुई. प्रस्तुत हैं कल रात के मरिमय के जलूस की तस्वीरें जो अँधेरे और मोमबत्तियों की रोशनी की वजह से अनूठी हैं.

Bologna, Italy: The simple looking church near our house is about a thousand years old. Every year in October they celebrate a Madonna festival when the statue of Madonna is taken out of the church in a night procession. Here are some pictures from last night's procession that have a special quality because of the darkness and the candles.

Ogni anno nel mese di ottobre qui si celebra la festa della Madonna durante la quale la statua della Madonna è portata fuori in una processione serale. Child with eel - Bimbo con anguilla - बच्चा और सर्पमीन

बोलोनिया, इटलीः यहाँ के नगरपालिका कला संग्रहालय में रखी जोर्जो कियेनार्क द्वारा बनायी इस मूर्ती को सन 1893 में सर्वश्रेष्ठ शिल्प का पुरस्कार मिला था. पानी में पायी जाने वाली साँप जैसी दिखने वाली सर्पमीन से मुझे डर सा लगता है. इस मूर्ती में बच्चे के चेहरे का भाव बहुत सुंदर है.

Bologna, Italy: The statue of boy with the eel by Giogio Kienerk in Bologna's municple art collection museum had received the award for best sculpture in 1893. I am a little afraid of eels, that are fish but look like snakes. I love the child's expression in this statue.

Bologna, Italia: La statua del ragazzo con l'anguilla è dello scultore toscano Giorgio Kienerk ed è esposta nella collezione comunale di Bologna in Piazza Maggiore. Aveva ricevuto il premio per la migliore scultura nel 1893. Anguille mi fanno un po' di paura, comunque mi piace molto l'espressione sulla faccia del ragazzo di questa statua.
