Bologna Pride Parade - बोलोनिया गर्व परेड

Yesterday 28 June was the day of gay, lesbian, bisexual and transgender (GLBT) pride parade in Bologna.

Last few weeks have been full of protests in Bologna. Different alternative and minority groups have been protesting as the city administration has decided that they will not be allowed to do their meetings in the city centre as local residents have been complaining about the high level of noise and garbage left by such meetings. The anti-prohibitionist street rave planned for 1 July will also remain outside the city.

The GLBT parade is not asssociated with unruly or destructive people, but even they were asked to shift to the city periphery. GLBT spokespersons have been saying that it is the church that is influencing the government against them. So last night, when the parade arrived, the crowd at GLBT show was not very big. Predictably, the speeches were full of firey warnings to the mayor and prime minister for not abondoning their promises to GLBT community. The words against the vatican and the pope were vitriolic.

The language was predictably very colourful. Just one example from the speech of Marcella, a trans-gender leader who had worked in films of luminaries like Fellini, and who is a councillor in Bologna assembly, while speaking about the prime minister said, "I will not let let you **** me. In my time, I have been a prostitute and people paid big amounts for that privilege. And, now after taking our votes, you have decided to **** us? Remember you won with only 24,000 votes, if you are next careful, we are more than a million and next time we shall **** you."

There was lot of police but they all seemed to be enjoying themselves. And after the speeches, the songs, music and dances were great fun.

इन दिनों बोलोनिया में रोज़ धरने, मोर्चे हो रहे हैं. पिछले चुनावों में वामपंथी पार्टियाँ जीती थीं जोकि जन अभियानों, कामगर यूनियनों, धरने मोर्चे करने वालों के करीब रहीं हैं तो लगता था कि धरने, विरोध मार्च आदि कुछ कम हो जायेंगे, पर हुआ उल्टा ही है. आजकल ग्रीष्म ऋतु समारोह में अक्सर विभिन्न अल्पसँख्यक दल कुछ न कुछ प्रोग्राम करते हैं, जिन्हें यहाँ की सरकार शहर के केंद्र में घुसने की अनुमति नहीं देती और उन्हें शहर की परिधी के बाहर की तरफ ही रोक दिया जाता है.

कल शाम समलैंगिक, द्विलैंगिक और अंतरलैंगिक गर्व परेड थी. हालाँकि सब मानते हैं कि वे लोग कुछ दंगा फसाद या तोड़ाफोड़ी नहीं करते, फ़िर भी उन्हें भी शहर के बाहर कोने में रुकना पड़ा. बहुत पुलिस थी और शायद लड़ाई झगड़ा होने के डर से बहुत अधिक लोग नहीं आये. परेड के अंत में भाषड़ों में बोलोनिया की सरकार और प्रधानमंत्री श्री रोमानो प्रोदी को याद कराया गया कि बिना सं.द्वि.अं. गुटों के सहयोग के वह आज गद्दी पर नहीं होते. वेटीकान और पोप को बहुत गालियाँ दीं गयीं.

पर झगड़ों और गालियों के बाद जब उनका सांस्कृतिक कार्यक्रम शुरु हुआ तब गीत संगीत और नृत्य में असली आनंद आया. आज इसी परेड की कुछ तस्वीरें.

Wings for levitation - उड़ने के पँख

Yesterday evening at Villa Trocchi park, there were different events in different parts of the park. I started with the street theater group, who were doing The Foot. It was about environmental pollution, consumerism and wars, asking people to rebel and not to accept the dominant ideologies. Even if they never talked about USA specifically, it was evident that they thought USA was main responsible for many of the problems of the world today.

Afterwards, I shifted to the Indian-Western fusion dance. There were three french guys doing it, wearing tight pants and t-shirts. The stage was lit by a few lanterns and in their glow, they showed some nice acrobatics that usually started and ended in some Yoga position. The darkness added to the strangeness of their performance.

The last performance I saw was of an American girl, who taught people how to fly. It was strange since she was speaking in English and not so many Italians understand it, especially the older ones do not, but still people seemed to understand her. With cardboard wings on their shoulders, people were made to do crazy steps, all the while the teacher kept her non-stop chatter. Like, "Now we are going to try hopping and balancing our bodies on one leg. Before we can take off both the legs and actually fly, we must get used to one leg." And it made me think of Maharishi Mahesh Yogi and his claims of levitation and all those people who thought that transdental meditation wll help them levitate up in air!

Tomorrow, tuesday, there is Bharatnatyam performance in programme, so looking forward to it!

कल शाम को बाग में विभिन्न कोनों में कुछ न कुछ हो रहा था. कुछ देर तक काली धारियों वाले सफ़ेद कपड़े पहने हुए एक सड़क-नाटक को देखा. यह नाटक पर्यावरण के प्रदूषण, उपभोक्तावाद संस्कृति और युद्ध के विरुद्ध संदेश दे रहा था और हालाँकि किसी ने अमरीका का नाम नहीं लिया, पर स्पष्ट था कि नाटककार अमरीका को इन समस्याओं की जड़ मानता है.

फ़िर कुछ देर तक भारतीय और पश्चिमी नृत्य शैलियों को मिला किया जाने वाला नृत्य देखा. अँधेरे रंगमंच पर कुछ लालटेने लटका रखी थीं. उसे आधुनिक नृत्य कह सकते हैं क्योंकि उस पर तीन फ्राँसिसी युवक उछल कूद कर एक्रोबेटिक्स दिखा रहे थे, कभी रस्सी से लटकते, कभी खम्बे से कूदते, कभी एक दूसरे के कँधे पर चढ़ जाते. इस नृत्य की भारतीय प्रेरणा योगासनों से थी क्योंकि हर नृत्य मुद्रा किसी न किसी योगासन की मुद्रा से ही प्रारम्भ होती और उसी पर ही समाप्त होती.

अंत में अमरीका से आयी एक युवती ने लोगों को उड़ना सिखाना देखा. कँधे पर पँख रख कर लोगों से खूब नाच नचवाये, जिसे देख कर महेश योगी जी और उनके ट्राँसडेंटल ध्यान जिससे लोग उड़ने का सपना देखते थे याद आ गया. सोचा कि कहीं वह युवती किसी महेश योगी आश्रम से तो वह नृत्य सीख कर नहीं आयी थी ? अंत में लोग सचमुच उड़े या नहीं, यह तो नहीं देखा, क्योंकि रात बहुत हो चुकी थी और मुझे नींद आ रही थी.

कल मँगलवार को एक जगह भरतनाटयम का प्रोग्राम है, अब उसका इंतज़ार है.

Rings of fire - अग्निचक्र

Last night at the summer festival there was a performance called "Rings of fire", I think that it made for a good photo-opportunity. You can judge for yourselves from the pictures below.

In the summer evenings, drinking cold beer and lazying around on the grass, listening to some music or watching some dances, is a good way to pass time and relax. So every morning I look at the different events of the summer festival planned for the day and decide where we can go in the evening. Tonight, we plan to go to an Indian-western fusion dance show.

कल रात को ग्रीष्म ऋतु फैस्टिवल में एक अग्निचक्र भी था, जिसकी तस्वीरें आज प्रस्तुत हैं. आज रात को भारतीय और पश्चिमी नृत्यशैलियों को मिला कर बना फ्यूज़न नृत्य का प्रोग्राम है. ठँडी बियर के साथ, बाग में घास पर बैठ कर गर्म रातों में नृत्य संगीत के कार्यक्रमों में, अगर नृत्य या संगीत बहुत बढ़िया न भी हों तो मज़ा आ ही जाता है. उस पर से सब कुछ मुफ्त हो तो और भी अच्छा!

Full lives - पूर्ण जीवन

Todays' pictures celebrate human diversity. They are from a photo contest of World Health Organisation (WHO) and relate to disability. Usually disability is presented in problematic terms, often in such a way that it provokes pity and similar feelings. The beauty of these pictures is to show disability as part of human diversity, present in all aspects of our lives and that in different phases of our lives, we must all need support of others.

Both the pictures are from 2004-2005 contest.The first is "Wheels of marriage" by Krzystof Glouch and the second is "Participation" by Subash Kumar Sharma. You can see all the pictures of this contest at the WHO site under "ICF Photo contest".

आज दो तस्वीरें विश्व स्वास्थ्य संगठन (वी.स्व.स.) के विकलांगता से सम्बंधित एक छायाचित्र प्रतियोगिता से. इन चित्रों की विषेशता है कि यह मानव जीवन में विकलांगता के स्थान को दया या दयनीयता की दृष्टि से नहीं देखते बल्कि उसे मानव जीवन का अभिन्न अंग मानते हैं और इसलिए जीवन के हर पहलू के साथ घुला मिला कर प्रस्तुत करते हैं. जो दो तस्वीरें मैंने चुनी हैं वे २००५ की प्रतियोगिता से है. पहली तस्वीर का शीर्षक है "विवाह के पहिए", क्रिस्टोफ गोलुख की. दूसरी तस्वीर "भाग लेना", सुभाष कुमार शर्मा की. अगर आप इस प्रतियोगिता की अन्य तस्वीरों को देखना चाहते हैं तो उन्हें अंतरजाल पर वि.स्व.स. के जालस्थल पर "आई.सी.एफ. फोटो कोन्टेस्ट" में पायेंगे.

Against all prohibitions - बोलोनिया स्वप्न मार्ग

Like every year, they are fighting about the Bologna street rave parade. It is supposed to be on 1 July. People get together in Margherita gardens and the parade is supposed to go accross the city and then get together in another park, where music and festivities continue till next day noon. It celebrates fight against all kinds of prohibitions, so is an occasion for trying out drugs & alcohol. It is hot so you can move around almost undressed (sometimes, the "almost" can also be dropped!), I am sure it has lot of possibilities for physical intimacies.

However the mayor is saying that this year the parade will not pass through the city centre. It makes too much noise and leaves tons of broken bottles, cans and trash every where. The parade organisers are determined that they will pass through the centre of the city. While we wait for them to come to an agreement, here are some pictures from last year's rave.

हर साल की तरह इस वर्ष भी वार्षिक स्वप्न मार्ग परेड के बारे में झगड़ा शुरु हो गया है. हर तरह के बंधनों के विरुद्ध होने वाली यह परेड शराब, नशे, आदि की स्वतंत्रता की माँग करती है. लोग भाँग जैसे पदार्थ या मारिजुआना खुले आम पीते है, बियर और वाईन की नदियां बहती हैं, लोग निर्वस्त्र हो कर सड़कों पर नाचते हैं, रात भर बाग में गीत संगीत की महफ़िल चलती है. इस वर्ष की स्ट्रीट रेव यानि स्वप्न मार्ग पार्टी १ जुलाई को होगी. नगरपालिका कहती है कि परेड को शहर के बीच नहीं घुसने दिया जाये, क्योंकि लोग तोड़ फोड़ करते हैं, गंदगी फैलाते हैं. परेड वाले जिद में हैं कि वे लोग शहर के बीच में से अवश्य गुज़रेंगे. जब तक यह फैसला हो, कुछ तस्वीरें पिछले वर्ष के स्वप्न मार्ग से.

From eagle's eyes - चील की नज़र से

Two views of Bologna, seen from the top of Asinella tower in the old city centre. Bologna is city of towers, most of them built during medieval times, initially for defence purposes and later probably for "mine is longer than yours"! Many of them were destroyed during second world war and now many lie hidden between multistorey buildings. I plan to go up there once when Bologna will be covered with snow.

बोलोनिया शहर के दो दृष्य, शहर के बीच बनी आज़िनेल्ला मीनार की छत से. ऊपर जाने के लिए सीड़ियाँ चढ़ चढ़ कर पाँव अवश्य थक जाते हैं पर वहाँ से शहर कितना सुंदर दिखता है. सोचा है कि अगली सर्दियों में जब शहर में बर्फ गिरेगी तो वापस मीनार पर जाऊँगा और बर्फ से ढ़के शहर की तस्वीरें खींचूँगा.

Dancing stars - नाचते सितारे

Last night was Danza Amores night in Bologna, as part of the summer festival. A stage was set up in the centre of Piazza Maggiore, the central sqaure of the city. Dancing stars from famous ballet schools including Russia, France, USA, Germany were there to present themes on love from famous operas like Swan Lake, Giselle, Carmen and Romeo & Juliet. It was pure heaven and I would liked to stay there but at midnight I had tear myself away! One of most wonderful and magical evenings ever. And it was free.

बोलोनिया के ग्रीष्म समारोह में कल रात को बारी थी बेले नृत्य की. रोम का बेले विद्यालय, मोस्को का नृत्य संघ, म्यूनिख का ओपेरा, पेरिस का अंतर्राष्ट्रीय नृत्य विद्यालय, अमरीकी नृत्य कम्पनी, सभी आये थे बोलोनिया प्रेम के विषय पर नृत्य दिखाने, मशहूर ओपेरा जैसे स्वानलेक (हँसों की झील), जिसेल, कारमेन, रोमोयों और जूलियट जैसे नृत्यों के कुछ भाग दिखाने. सब कुछ मुफ्त था, बोलोनिया के पुराने शहर के केंद्र में खुले आकाश के नीचे. रात को बारह बजे, दुखी मन उसे बीच में छोड़ का आना पड़ा क्योंकि आज काम पर जाना था, पर मन में उन नृत्यों की छवि अभी भी बनी हुई है.

Nepali kitchens - नेपाली रसोईयाँ

Today all the pictures are from kitchens in Nepal. Technically these are not very good pictures but I like them because I think that a kitchen tells you about the country and its people in way that is very different from all others.

आज की सभी तस्वीरें नेपाल यात्रा में देखी कुछ रसोईयों की हैं. यह तस्वीरें कुछ विषेश अच्छी नहीं हैं पर मेरे विचार में रसोई से देश के बारे में ऐसी जानकारी मिलती है जो अन्य सब तस्वीरों से अलग होती है.

Geometrical designs - ज्यामितिक डिज़ाइन

Once I saw the picture book on Rajiv Gandhi prepared by his wife, Sonia. The book explained about Rajiv's hobbies including his love for photography. There were some of the pictures taken by Rajiv, all in black and white and all underlining the geometry in nature - in the lines on the beach, in the waves of the ocean, in the steps going down a hill, in the line of light poles. Often when I see geometric designs through the lens of my camera, I think of those pictures and try to imagine the kind of man who would love the symmetry & clean shapes of lines.

I don't particularly like symmetries and geometrical designs, usually trying to break them with some other figures. The pictures today are about geometrical designs, all taken at the cathedral of Quito in Ecuador.

एक बार किसी के घर पर राजीव गाँधी पर सोनिया गाँधी द्वारा लिखी किताब देखने का मौका मिला, जिसमें राजीव गाँधी द्वारा ली हुई कई तस्वीरें भी थीं. सभी तस्वीरों में तस्वीर लेने वाले ने ज्यामितिक डिज़ाइन उभरते थे, पानी की लहरों में, रोशनी के खम्बों में, इत्यादि. मुझे केवल ज्यामितिक डिज़ाइन ही हों तो तस्वीर अच्छी नहीं लगती, उसमें कोई प्राणी भी हों तो अच्छा लगता है. आज की तस्वीरें एक्वाडोर की राजधानी कीटो के केथेड्रल से हैं, जिनमें ज्योमितिक डिज़ाइन भी हैं और प्राणी भी.
